It’s no coincidence that the Flaming Lips incorporated UFOs into the title of their DVD, since the performance presented on it is out of this world.
From start to finish, the documented concert is a high-energy, sensory stimulating spectacle that provides all the entertainment one could hope for. The band manages to put on a show involving onstage aliens, Santa Clauses, fake blood, oodles of confetti, balloons and even a UFO without seeming hokey or over-the-top. The Flaming Lips also manage to keep their sound and style true to what their fans have come to expect. The members are amazing showmen and seem to be thoroughly enjoying their art at every point in the show.
While some recorded concerts fail to fully convey the feeling of being in person at the concert, U.F.O.s at the Zoo does a stellar job of capturing not only the energy of the band but also the enthusiasm of the fans as well. In addition, the overall sound and picture quality of the DVD is excellent.
The only disappointing aspects of the DVD are the special features. Besides backstage footage from the concert after every few songs, there is little in the way of special features available on a DVD player. The special features are only accessible by playing the DVD on a computer, which requires registering online to gain access to the features. While this isn’t horribly inconvenient, it is more of a hassle than traditional DVD special features menus.
After finding the special features, you can choose which parts of the concert to watch, which is similar to going to scene selection on a DVD menu. The DVD also features the songs performed in the concert without video footage, downloadable ringtones for songs by The Flaming Lips, create-your-own mixes of Flaming Lips’ songs to turn into ringtones, downloadable wallpaper and buddy icons for your computer.
Despite the less-than-impressive special features on the DVD, U.F.O.s at the Zoo is definitely a worthwhile two hours of entertainment. Regardless of whether you are a die-hard Flaming Lips fan or have never heard a single song of theirs, check out this DVD if you like good music and great showmanship.
