Decking the Cupples House halls

‘Tis the season for the tannenbaum. Saint Louis University will have its own outdoor Christmas tree for the first time this year. The tree is located outside the historic Samuel Cupple’s House on campus.

The lighting of the tree will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m., and will also mark the kickoff of the house’s “Holiday Rooms and Blooms” feature. KMOV news anchor Vicki Newton will be on hand to light the tree. The outdoor ceremony will also feature performances by SLU carolers under the direction of Pam Dees.

“The purpose of the tree is to get the students into the holiday spirit,” said Mary Marshall, marketing coordinator for the University’s museums. “Now that Thanksgiving has passed, we’re ready to think about Christmas, and the Cupples house wants to celebrate in style.”

Marshall hopes the tree lighting will become a holiday tradition at SLU. After the tree is lit, the students and guests will be welcomed into the house for a free reception. Refreshments will be provided.

The tree lighting also serves as the start of “Holiday Rooms in Bloom,” an event where local florists decorate the rooms of the Cupples House. Marshall said the feature is an encore of “Rooms in Bloom,” a similar event that took place last spring. Participating are 14 florists from Baisch & Skinner and the St. Louis Florist Network. The florists each select a room and will design a floral interpretation from the room. Inspiration may come from the woodwork, stained glass or other pieces of art.

“I have no idea what to expect,” Marshall said, “except amazing talent on display. It’s amazing what the florists will use for their inspiration.” Marshall said that “Holiday Rooms in Bloom” will give students “an opportunity to see the house shown off.”

“This is our first time hosting an event like this in December, but I hope students will stop by and have a look around,” Marshall said. “We have this jewel of a historic home right here on campus. It’s amazing that so many students walk by us every day but have never been in. The holidays will give them a special time to experience the house.”

In honor of the event, Cupples House will remain open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The fun will continue on Thursday, Dec. 6, St. Nick’s Day, with a smaller reception later that evening. Students and guests are encouraged to make a donation for College Church while visiting the house. Marshall emphasizes the need for clothes for both children and adults, but says toys and non-perishable food items are also welcomed. Gifts need not be wrapped.

The house’s gift shop will also be selling exclusive holiday items, such as candles and greeting cards.

“Students can do all their holiday shopping without ever leaving campus,” Marshall said.

“Holiday Rooms in Bloom” will run through Dec. 9. Both the exhibit and the lighting are free of charge.
