Nobody Likes a Quitter gives life advice

“Dan Dunn is a maniac. If you see him coming your way, for the love of God, buy him a drink and listen to some of his stories.”

This enticing description of Dunn, given by “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” creator Rob McElhenny at the beginning of Dunn’s book Nobody Likes a Quitter (and Other Reasons to Avoid Rehab), proves itself an accurate summary of the novel’s mood.

Dunn is a wine and spirits columnist for Metro International Newspapers, and thus spends vast amounts of time in a state of inebriation for what he refers to as “research purposes.” In Quitter, Dunn tells of his adventures in the world of wine in a way that never ceases to amuse.

Dunn himself admits in the book’s Author’s Note that “some of the material has been either significantly embellished or wholly invented,” and describes the book as “a mosh pit of fact and fiction, with yours truly doing a bit of body surfing.”

With such a description from the author, it seems inevitable that the book would be an entertaining-or, at the very least, interesting- read.

Quitter is written in such a way that the reader feels more like he or she is hearing stories told by a slightly tipsy uncle than actually reading a book.

Dunn bounces back and forth between telling of his exploits of the past and his life in the present, frequently goes on tangents about random topics (“I think I’d like to knit the world a giant sweater using the thread that comes with every purchase at Banana Republic”) and still manages to prove his credibility as a wine and spirits writer by throwing in detailed descriptions of various types of alcoholic drinks.

Quitter is a hilarious and well-written work and, to quote McElhenney a second time, “If you don’t think this book is funny then your opinion on anything no longer matters.”
