Kevin Smith chronicles life in the fast lane, or lack thereof

Don’t think the title is misleading-Kevin Smith’s life really is boring. Not mind-numbingly, fall-asleep-in-class boring, but definitely not as glamorous as one would expect from a well-known Hollywood director.

Smith’s new book, My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith (Oct. 21, Titan) is an in-depth chronicle of his life from March 20, 2005, through Dec. 22, 2006.

Smith documents even the minute details in his life, telling where he went, whom he saw, what was talked about and so on.

In addition, he also regales his readers with information about being intimate with his wife and his morning trip to the bathroom, with real journalistic prowess.

Although Smith recounts numerous meetings regarding his own work and outside projects with which he is associated, these make up a small portion of the diary. This helps the work tremendously, as does the telling of his daily routine that portrays Smith as just a regular guy instead of a Hollywood personality, which makes the book appealing.

Smith’s days usually consist of waking up, letting his dogs out, going to the bathroom, taking his daughter to school, playing poker online and falling asleep to TiVo’ed episodes of “The Simpsons.”

Despite the routine, however, the diary is in no way boring. Smith details his life with a good dose of humor, a touch of crassness and sincere love for those in his life, particularly his wife and daughter. This combination makes the book a quick, easy and entertaining read, despite its 470 pages.

Most people have a misconception that the lives of anyone involved in Hollywood consist of parties, living large and generally living in a way that the rest of us could never even begin to imagine. With his diary, Smith breaks all of these ideas, portraying himself as a “real” person; someone you could call up and hang out with.

Although Smith calls his life boring, My Boring-Ass Life is actually quite the opposite and is well worth a read.
