Thanks to the Great Issues Committee, one Sudanese Lost Boy can be found at Saint Louis University on Dec. 6.
At 7 p.m., John Bul Dau will give a speech in the Busch Student Center ballrooms about the current and past crises in Sudan, including the Lost Boy generation, which consists of thousands of boys who were displaced or orphaned because of the violence in Sudan.
The speech is scheduled to last no more than 45 minutes, according to GIC Chair Dan McGinnis, and will be followed by a 20 minute question-and-answer session. Students with any remaining questions and would like to meet Dau will get a chance to do so at a reception immediately following the Q&A.
Dau was featured in Christopher Quinn’s documentary God Grew Tired of Us, which followed three Lost Boys and their sponsored relocation to the United States. His speech will center around troubles in Sudan, including the war in 1987 that was responsible for creating the Lost Boys generation and the current genocide taking place in Darfur. The speech is also designed to spread the word about what people can do to help.
GIC chooses speakers based on what issues are happening in the world that they feel should be brought to SLU’s attention, which was what made them pursue Dau.
“[Problems in Sudan are] the new Holocaust of our time,” McGinnis said. “It’s an issue that people need to hear.”
Junior and OneWorld President Amanda Ring-Rissler said she plans to attend the event and stressed the importance of students hearing a first person account of the conflicts.
“[First person accounts] are valuable in that they are so raw,” she said, expressing hope that such an experience would provide a new perspective to SLU students.
