Saint Louis University named Christopher V. May as athletic director on Thursday, almost six months after the resignation of Cheryl Levick, former athletic director. In his most recent job, May was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. May will assume the position on March 1.
“I am extremely excited and honored to be named director of athletics at a University that is making the kinds of commitments to athletics that SLU is undertaking,” May said in a press release. “Fr. Biondi and Provost Dr. Joe Weixlmann are committed to enhancing intercollegiate athletics at SLU, and I will work with them to raise the profile of SLU athletics, win championships and continue the tradition of graduating our athletes.”
University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., said he thinks May has the kind of passion and commitment that can lead SLU’s athletic program to heightened national prominence.
“He brings a strong background in strategic planning and fundraising, which will be essential to move our program forward,” Biondi said in a press release. “His experience will be essential as we move into Chaifetz Arena this spring.”
At CU-Boulder, May has been active in the athletic department since 1985, facilitating multiple departmental advancements, including marketing, major-event management, corporate sponsorships, hiring of coaches, fundraising and building relationships on and off the CU-Boulder campus.
With his experience, May “will take the Billiken program to new heights,” said CU-Boulder Athletic Director Mike Bohn in a press release.
Search committee chairperson and John Cook School of Business Dean Ellen Harshman said that May will be a “dynamic leader” and that he understands the University’s emphasis on academic excellence.
“His experience encompasses all areas of athletics management, and he will be able to step right in as athletics moves into its new home,” Harshman said in a press release.
