Many students will have to change their SLUnet password before the semester is out, said Ken Gebken, of SLU’s Quality Assurance Office.
Gebken, along with two representatives of Jefferson Wells-an internal auditing company hired to perform a risk assessment of student record security at SLU-gave a brief presentation about upcoming changes at the Jan. 30 Student Government Association meeting.
One of the largest reforms will be their transformation of the current password system; consequently, students will now have to set up new and more complex passwords at password.slu.edu. Students will also have the option to set up security questions at that time.
Undergraduates will be required to change their passwords by Apr. 29; graduate students will have to do the same by June 10. Under the new system, passwords will expire every 180 days, and once a password has had its run, it can’t be reused for 12 months.
The change reflects the more stringent security systems that are showing up in many businesses today, said Gebken.
Reminders will be sent to students later in the semester.
Senators also unanimously approved $2,241 in spot-funding for the Parks Guard, SLU’s rifle drill team.
The money will be used to fund the team’s trip to California, where they will compete against more than 20 other college teams in March.
