A cappella groups perform in BSC

The St. Louis Room in the Busch Student Center will be alive with the sound of music-beat boxing, whistling and a cappella music.

On Friday, April 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., Saint Louis University’s female a cappella group, Beyond All Reason, will host its annual spring show on the third floor of the BSC. This year’s show will also feature SLU’s male a cappella group, Bare Naked Statues.

“We’re spreading the a cappella love around campus,” said senior Mary Murphy, music director for BAR.

BAR, which was created in early 2004, performs two major concerts each year, winter and spring shows. Though this concert is an annual event, it holds special meaning for the group’s seniors, who have been members since BAR’s beginning.

“Personally, this is my last concert … and we have a number of girls that are graduating this year that have been with us all four years,” Murphy said. “It’s going to be a big concert for us.”

Prior to the BAR concert, the members of BNS will take the stage.

In addition to its performance opening for BAR, BNS will perform their own spring shows on May 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the BSC ballrooms. The group will also perform “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on Sept. 11 at Busch Stadium during a St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs baseball game.

“We’re really excited about that opportunity,” said Charlie Mueller, BNS’ music director. “It’s a really sought after game … It’ll be great exposure for us.”

Mueller said that the group’s spring show will have “some old songs, some new songs … and a really great variety.”

Like BNS, BAR also incorporates various musical genres into their shows, performing everything from Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” to Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” to a collection of R & B girl group Destiny’s Child’s greatest hits.

“We’ve tried to get a lot of new songs into this concert, so it’s a completely new set,” Murphy said. “With the exception of one song, no one will have heard [us perform] the songs before.

“We don’t really do gimmicks or anything like that … [but] we always try to incorporate the crowd; some lucky person might get dragged up onstage.”

BAR members should be able to pick from one of 172 confirmed guests, according to a Facebook events page. Though the number is high, BAR members expect an even greater number of people to attend the show.

“We’re really excited about the concert,” Murphy said. “We’re really looking forward to performing for everyone … It’s a good chance for people who support the arts to come out and hear good music.”

Tickets are $5 in advance or at the door. More information, as well as samples of the group’s music, can be found at the group’s Myspace page: www.myspace.com/slubeyondallreason. Information on BNS can be found at www.barenakedstatues.com.
