Jack’s Mannequin, others fully deliver

On the night of Friday, Sep. 26, Chaifetz Arena was filled with excited students flashing their IDs to gain free entry into this year’s Homecoming concert featuring Treaty of Paris, Eve 6 and headliner Jack’s Mannequin.

Treaty of Paris started the night off well, playing an energetic, albeit only half-hour long, set with songs from their album Sweet Dreams, Sucker.

Although the majority of the crowd waited to see Jack’s Mannequin, Treaty of Paris received a pretty good response, particularly during their cover of The Beatles’ “I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends.”

After Treaty of Paris finished their set, things were quickly set up for the next act, Eve 6. In the audience, there seemed to be a good mix of people. Some knew the majority of the songs Eve 6 performed, while others merely waited for the band’s big hits, “Inside Out” and “Here’s to the Night.”

Neither was disappointed, and Eve 6 complemented their older, well-known songs with some new ones.

Lastly, it was time for Jack’s Mannequin to perform. The first 1,000 students were given a wristband upon entry for floor seats, and those students definitely took advantage. The floor, already crowded during the first two acts, became packed as the stage was prepared for Jack’s Mannequin’s set.

Jack’s Mannequin made the wait and the over crowding well worth it. Lead singer Andrew McMahon is a performer who puts his all into wperforming, not only in the surface performance but also in the emotion with which he backs it up. The pure enjoyment he seems to take from performing is palpable.

The set consisted of songs from Jack’s Mannequin’s debut album, Everything in Transit, songs from their recently released second album, The Glass Passenger, and a soothing cover of the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have to Do is Dream.” The set finished off with a performance of “Me and the Moon,” a song by McMahon’s former band, Something Corporate. At one point, Treaty of Paris, soon to go on tour with Jack’s Mannequin, came on stage and sang with the headliners.

SAB’s lineup for the Homecoming concert put on a great show. All three delivered solid sets, and each act got progressively better throughout the night. The crowd left as energized by the end of the night as it was at the start some three hours earlier.
