Professional traveler offers tips for students

Fulfilling the dreams of many college students, Leon Logothetis backpacks across America and Europe as the host of Fox’s reality TV show, “Amazing Adventures of a Nobody.”

And he does it on $5 a day.

In 1957, author Arthur Frommer published Europe on Five Dollars a Day, a book that had a large impact on Americans traveling abroad.

Logothetis, a native Londoner, attempts to continue the book’s challenge in the 21st century by traveling on the same budget.

Logothetis first set out to see the world after being inspired by the Walter Salles’ film The Motorcycle Diaries. “[I was working] the streets of London and was not inspired,” he said.

It was then that Logothetis decided to embark on a journey across the world, “relying entirely on the kindness of strangers.”

He presented his idea for a show to a British television station, resulting in his own reality TV series. In the first season, Logothetis traveled across the United Kingdom.

The show was later picked up by the Fox Reality Channel in the United States and by National Geographic in more than 40 other countries.

In the show’s second season, he traveled on $5 a day from New York City’s Time Square to the legendary Hollywood sign looking over Los Angeles, spending most of his money on food.

Transportation and lodging were provided by the generosity and hospitality of the people he met along the way, including a woman in Chicago who gave him the keys to her house and a motel in New Mexico with fresh blood splattered on his door.

Logothetis encourages all students to study abroad.

“Travel changes people’s lives,” he said. “Going and traveling gives the people a journey externally and internally. You see the world and come back with a different perspective on life.”

Logothetis’ most important tip is to always be on the look for a great deal.

“Research, research, research,” he said. “There are always deals if you look for it.”

He recommends couchsurfing.com, a website that lists people in many different countries willing to offer travelers a night’s stay on their couch, and sites like aircoourier.org and couriertravel.net, sited that offer much cheaper air fare than normal.

In his show’s current season, Logothetis travels from Paris to Moscow on five euros a day.

The show offers advice on advance resources, cost savers on the road and essential items every traveler should have.

“Amazing Adventure of a Nobody” airs Mondays at 2 p.m. on the Fox Reality Channel.
