Saint Louis University students made their voices heard last week. And they did it with guitars.
Last Thursday, starting at 7 p.m., KSLU’s hosted this year’s Open Mic Night in The Billiken Club, located on the ground floor of the Busch Student Center.
It lasted until 9 p.m., and an estimated 50 to 60 students and music fans attended the event.
A large array of musical genres was represented throughout, ranging from indie-alternative rock to acoustic guitar and folk comedy.
Sanita Saengvilay, one of the brains behind the planning of the event, was especially pleased with the variety of performers present at the event.
“This year’s open mic night was very successful,” she said. “We usually only have a couple of solo acoustic performers . . . but this time we had a lot of bands.”
There were seven bands and solo acts that performed.
The lineup included indie rock band Ithaca, a folk acoustic guitar comedian Adam Venear, beat boxer Emilia Garcia, acoustic guitar player Chris Clow, new local rock band Sex Funeral and poet Trevor Clark.
Saengvilay was happy with the number of people that turned out for the event but wishes local artists got more attention.
“It’s always nice to see how many different bands are around SLU, but it’s sad that there is so much talent that goes unrecognized,” Saengvilay said.
Tony Burwinkle, lead guitarist of act Ithaca, would like to see the open mic night grow in the future.
“Very few people knew about the event,” he said. “Next year it could be a great event with more turn out; it’s a great opportunity for local SLU bands.”
