If only one word could be used to describe The 88’s recently released third album Not Only. But Also that word, without a doubt, would be ‘catchy.’
The overall vibe of Not Only. But Also is undeniably poppy, but pop with a funkier, quirky edge (think Mika or the Scissor Sisters). With the exceptions of “No One Here” and “Save Your Breath,” which are slower songs, the album is a treasure chest of up-tempo melodies that you will be unable to avoid bobbing your head to.
The 88 is a three-man band with instruments consisting simply of guitar, drums and piano. Although the guitar is the main instrument, there is an excellent balance between the three, and none of them overpower each other or the vocals.
However, the piano gives a definite flair to the songs that adds to their uniqueness. Vocally, lead-singer Keith Slettedahl has a pleasant voice and that is both easy to listen to and technically skilled.
The 88 presents with Not Only. But Also an album that is not only good in the technical aspects of the instrumentals, vocals and lyrics, but also easy to get drawn into.
It is definitely an album worth checking out.
