Senators continued to clash over the issue of the Senate and executive board seats currently occupied by members of the International Student Federation and the Black Student Alliance at Wednesday’s Student Government Association meeting.
The senators from BSA and ISF will remain in their seats after bills calling for their seats to be abolished were rejected. After the rejection of the bills, SGA motioned to postpone voting on related bills on the removal of ISF and BSA presidents from the Executive Board and also the creation of new diversity posts and committees.
Sen. Danny Laub, who authored the bills along with Sens. Kyle Benson and Andrew Miller, said that the postponement gave the senators time to “re-evaluate what we have and re-look at our approach to the bills.”
The decision came after a series of lengthy debates on the issue that have become characteristic of the last three SGA meetings. Senators battled over the issue, with some proposing to take immediate action and others calling for more specific planning before voting to remove the seats.
“Frankly it’s been stalling,” Laub said. “It’s wasting a lot of our time. . A do-nothing policy is never a good policy.”
Sen. Brian Hackworth disagreed, “Until we figure out what the end point is going to be we can’t make an intelligent decision on which direction to go.”
SGA also awarded $1,800 to Habitat for Humanity to help fund their mission trip to Miami over spring break. The Indian Student Association’s Ras team was also given funds to offset travel cost for two dance competitions.
