Lisa Reiter, director of Campus Ministry, is still contemplating the possibility of shifting 10 p.m. Mass at St. Francis Xavier College Church to 9 p.m.
“There are times I can make quick decisions. This is not one of them,” she said. “This is a very significant decision.”
Reiter said she is currently analyzing data from a survey that gauged students’ opinions on the potential time change. This data includes statistics and written comments.
A total of 331 Saint Louis University students responded to a question asking how often they would come to a rescheduled 9 p.m. Mass.
Out of these, 133 said they would attend more often than they do now, 150 said they would attend as much as they do now and 48 said they would attend less than they do now.
Reiter stressed the fact that numerical data will not be the sole factor in her decision. Ultimately, she said, she wants a solution that best suits the needs of SLU students.
“I have not made a decision, and I’m nowhere near making it,” she said.
Moving forward, Reiter said she would be analyzing overarching themes in students’ written comments, as well as the interests of different segments of the student body, including commuters, in the coming week.
The concerns of students, especially upperclassmen, who appreciate the tradition of 10 p.m. Mass, are not lost on Reiter, who spent 11 years planning the Mass as assistant director of Campus Ministry.
“There is no one in the world who has been to that Mass and has such a strong commitment to it as I do,” she said.
Reiter said that she will announce her decision at a 10 p.m. Mass before May 3.
Regardless of the outcome, Reiter seemed confident that the appeal of the communal Sunday Mass would endure.
“What makes the 10 p.m. Mass so special is the people … who come together and celebrate the sacrament of the Church,” she said. “If we adjust the time, I think what makes the Mass so special and unique is still going to be there.”
