Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox will speak at the Busch Student Center on Sept. 15.
Fox’s Speech, entitled “Surveying the Geo-Political Landscape,” will feature information on his views regarding various political situations throughout the world, as well as stories from his life experiences.
“It’s an honor to have a leader so highly esteemed and he has a name recognition . the average citizen has awareness of who he is,” said Danny Laub, GIC associate chair.
In addition, Laub said that one positive about Fox is that he has name recognition.
“The average citizen has an awareness of who he is,” he said.
In addition to Fox, GIC has started booking speakers for the upcoming academic year, including Fr. Mark Rivazza and author Tracy Kidder.
Currently, GIC is a standing committee that “brings in diverse speakers who will convey a message to SLU students and help them grow to make changes out in the world today,” GIC Committee Chair Steve Della Camera said.
GIC is comprised of a committee of 20 people who choose various speakers.
“The speakers represent the campus voice in general and are qualified in discussing what is happening out in society today,” Della Camera said.
Despite previous claims of having a liberal slant, GIC members said that is not indicative of the future.
“We have had problems in the past, but we hope to move forward. GIC is not always on the right side of the aisle and every speaker has been brought due here to knowledge and not political stance,” said Della Camera.
One way GIC hopes to reach out to the SLU community is by asking students to recommend speakers. In return, if the speaker is selected, the students will be allowed to meet the guest speaker.
Ultimately, Della Camera said that GIC’s job is to help bring up all issue points and make sure that each speaker’s message is applicable to the whole student body.
“If GIC isn’t provoking thought and sparking debate, it’s failing as an organization,” Laub said.
