The somewhat mysterious $45 student activity fee that appears on students’ accounts every semester is about to become a lot clearer, or so hopes Michael Harris, Student Government Association president. A town hall meeting geared toward explaining just what exactly the point of it is and what it does is planned for Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Wool Ballrooms on the ground floor of the Busch Student Center.
Unlike past town hall meetings, there will be no University administrators present, Harriss said. Instead, the event will primarily be hosted by members of SGA. Financial Vice President Robert Moehle will describe what the student activity fee is, how it is allocated and how students can benefit from it. From there, students will be seated at different tables with assorted SGA Senators, who will be present to gather feedback on the fee, and to generally give “students a chance to voice any concerns they have on [it],” Harriss said.
“The main objective is for students to understand how the money is used and where the money goes,” he said. “I feel like a lot of students pay this and . really have no idea what it goes to.”
Harriss, who expects a large turnout, encouraged students to bring their friends and learn the ins and outs of the fee, to discuss the potentiality of a student activity fee increase and whether students would feel like it’s something that’s necessary.
Harriss said he expects that the regular format of town hall meetings, in which administrators sit down with students to discuss the state of Saint Louis University, to return this spring, after next year’s tuition increase is announced.
Some students indicated interest in attending the event.
“If I had the option to go [to the town hall] I would,” said junior Matt Johns, a member of the Club Volleyball team. “If the activity fee raise would give back our travel money, I’d vote for it.”
