Judging by the solid homecoming lineup and early announcement of Lupe Fiasco’s appearance, it is easy to see that the Student Activities Board is beginning the year on a high note and already exceeding expectations.
Determined to turn things around from previous years, SAB is making some changes within their executive board system. By forming the new music advisory board of 12 representatives, SAB will have a more dependable way of booking artists. Because of the late announcement of the artist, last year’s homecoming had a disappointing turnout.
This year, however, SAB has announced the homecoming artist a month early. Already, more than 500 students have replied to the Facebook event and are planning to attend, and excitement is building up for the homecoming concert.
Furthermore, bringing a rap artist proves that SAB is making an attempt to step out of its comfort zone. It will also change the genre of SAB’s past guests, attracting a new and larger audience. By inviting To Write Love On Her Arms to the University, SAB also shows its involvement and dedication to addressing a variety of societal issues. This is commendable in any student organization.
Overall, the SAB leadership has proven worthy and capable. Their improvement from the previous years can serve as an example for other student groups, showing that progress in such measures is not only possible, but also expected and necessary from all student groups that seeking to increase membership.
If student leaders can show dedication to making changes in their groups, the student body will respond with heightened loyalty and the administration will also take them more seriously. Good leadership requires not more work by students, but, as SAB has done with the new music advisory board, better delegation of tasks and more involvement and responsibility from student leaders.
