“Correspondent Lesbian Space Alien” seeks focus

The last film I saw today, the conclusion of my tri-film marathon, was the sci-fi comedy “Correspondent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same.”

Funny title, huh? And funny film, as well.

“Lesbian Space Alien” starts with an alien planet sending aliens to Earth in order to fall in love and have their hearts broken. This is supposed to repair their ozone layer which has been deteriorating because there are too many positive feelings on their planet.

One of the aliens, Zoinx, meets Jane (Lisa Haas) a lonely woman who works in a stationary store. The two begin a hilarious and unorthodox courtship.

“Lesbian Space Alien” is really funny. Humour was never its problem. Lack of narrative focus is. Clocking in at a brief 74 minutes, “Lesbian Space Alien” feels much longer than that. Also, it has three different subplots which shows a lack of faith in one’s actors and one’s own ability to tell a compelling story.

While Haas is quite pleasant in her role, and her subplot is cute and amusing, one of the subplots involving a senior and rookie agent of some unknown government force is brutal and grueling. It’s painfully unfunny, drolly acted and poorly written. It tries so hard for laughs that it hurts the audience to watch.

Filmed in black-and-white, “Lesbian Space Alien” is a loving homage to corny 1950s sci-fi films. While this all sounds good in theory, perhaps that’s all the film ever was – an amusing idea. The plot sounds like fun but that’s about all there is to “Lesbian Space Alien.” I laughed, but needless to say, I was thoroughly disappointed.
