Obscure sports gain popularity on campus

For any student who might be tired of the monotony of standard sports, despair no more. Saint Louis University probably offers a sport obscure enough to please even the toughest customer. Handball After a brief hiatus, SLU's handball club is currently in a rebuilding year.

Team follows OT win with letdown

The Saint Louis University women's basketball team split its two games this past week, earning an overtime victory against La Salle last Saturday and losing to Charlotte this past Tuesday. The Billikens entered the Charlotte game hoping to extend their two-game road win streak, their first such streak since the final road game of the 2001-2002 and the first road game of the 2002-2003 season.

Billikens sink UMass at home

It may be cold outside, but Paul Eckerle and the Saint Louis Billikens were hot last night against the Massachusetts Minutemen at Chaifetz Arena. The Bills (10-6, 1-1) downed UMass 69-64 in the Atlantic 10 home opener in front of 7,600 fans, improving their home record to 9-1 this season.

Winter break features highs and lows for young team

No one told head men's basketball coach Rick Majerus and his players that there was a winter break. The Saint Louis Billikens played seven games during the University's month-long hiatus, managing a respectable 5-2 record. The team also finished non-conference play over winter break on Jan.

Season concludes with second-round loss in NCAA Tourney

The women's volleyball team's season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Dec. 5, when the team lost a heartbreaking game to Michigan in five sets. However, the volleyball team recorded one of the most successful seasons in program history, winning many games and earning several accolades.

Team starts slow out of the blocks

Because of a shaky beginning at the first meet on Jan. 9 at the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo., the indoor track and field season may have been a little slow off the starting blocks. However, the team is anticipated to pick up speed for a strong season.

‘Training camp’ preps swimmers for A-10

Though he is contractually obligated to remain discreet on the details, head swimming and diving coach Jim Halliburton possesses knowledge of some exciting news: over winter break, one of his athletes won money on the "The Price is Right." This was just one of the many adventures from what was an action-packed winter break for the swimming and diving team.

Defense secures victory

After losing its first conference game to Dayton, the women's basketball team rebounded with a solid win against Fordham, 64-48. While Fordham kept pace with the Billikens throughout much of the game, the Billikens held Fordham to only 4 points in the final 11:43 to secure the win.

On their way to the big show

Senior Whitney Roth and head coach Anne Kordes have a lot in common. Both attended Assumption High School in Louisville, Ky., both were coached as setters by Kordes' father and both have gained recognition for excellence at the net. Perhaps most importantly, both are headed to the NCAA Tournament this weekend.

Top-25 foes await team out West

At the beginning of this season, head coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said that the women's basketball team wanted to face the best in order to improve. And this weekend, it will have the opportunity to do just that. The team will take a trip to the West Coast for the Collier's International Classic, which will take place in Berkley, Cal.

Fouls, stifling Saluki defense plague SLU in road loss

It was tough sledding from the opening tip. The Billikens were burried early in their matchup against Southern Illinois Universtity-Carbondale Dec. 2, as SIUC opened the game on an 11-2 run within the first nine minutes of the game. The game finished 64-48 in favor of SIUC and marked the third straight loss for the Billikens.

Family atmosphere gives Bills an edge on boards

The diving team is dominating this season-with three of the seven members qualifying for the zone meet, the team is on its way to victory. The Zone Meet, described by head coach Jim Halliburton to be the biggest accomplishment of the season so far, is the extra step divers must participate in to prove their abilities before moving on to the NCAA competition.
