Spirit organization looks to attain sixth-man status

As the men's basketball team embarks on the arduous journey of building a solid program from scratch, the team's spirit organization, Blue Crew, will also attempt to organize their ranks and spark student interest in games. Blue Crew plans to host more events like the one on Nov.

The 2008-2009 men's basketball season has included intense training and conditioning for the team. According to Erick Schork, men's and women's basketball strength and conditioning coach, persistent training is the key to the teams' success. "The secret to success in training is consistency," Schork said.

Regional meet caps off season

According to senior Mary Maloney, it was a bittersweet experience. The NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by Oklahoma State University on Nov. 15, marked the final competition of the season for the Saint Louis University cross country team. The women's squad was fully represented in the team competition, and placed 20th out of 27 complete teams.

Nobody expected this one to be close . except the men's basketball team. Saint Louis University took on Kent State last night in a fight that became an all-out brawl. The Billikens lost by 41 points last season to KSU. And, even though the Bills gave a thrilling performance this time around, they still lost in overtime, 76-74.

With eyes on the (A-10) prize

Oh, how sweet it is. For the first time since joining the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2005, the Billikens are sole champions of the West Division regular season crown. They enter the A-10 Championship Tournament as the No. 1 seed after finishing the season undefeated in the conference.

Sometimes, ankle wrapping and ice packs just don't do the trick. When it comes to this, Saint Louis University trainers turn to alternative approaches to treating a wide range of sports injuries. With a common goal of alleviating pain, techniques such as chiropractics, acupuncture, massage therapy, laser therapy, "rolfing" and light therapy are methods that make up these alternative approaches.

SLU will play its first-round game of NCAA Tourney on home turf

Despite faltering in the Atlantic 10 Tournament to the University of Massachusetts, 2-0, the Saint Louis University men's soccer team still managed to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Awaiting the team is a 7 p.m. showdown with Drake University tomorrow night at Robert R.

Head women's basketball coach Shimmy Gray-Miller is thankful for her six upperclassmen. It's nothing against the youngesters-in fact, she loves the freshmen. Even so, she recognizes that they can be "silly," and the upperclassmen bring needed maturity to the team.

The volleyball team is riding high this year-it defeated No. 3 Stanford, is currently No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and, for the first time in program-history, is nationally ranked. But none of that matters. There's a storm on a way. The No. 20 Billikens go to Ohio to face conference rivals Xavier and Dayton this weekend in an end-of-the-season showdown.

Dahle hones long distance skills

Sophomore Michael Dahle is not a pressure swimmer. As a specialist in the long distance events, he can't be. Otherwise, the daunting task that awaits him almost every meet-the grueling 1000-, 500-, and 200-meter races-would be too much too handle, even for someone enrolled in the notorious physical therapy program.
