Senior Expresses Disappointment

Matthew S. Mourning May 4, 2007
To the Editor: I write to you with sincere disappointment at the university's intent to seize control of an 86-year old publication that has, until now, retained its independence and has bestowed a voice upon countless students in that time span. The proposed changes to The University News' charter is, of course, an attempt to silence an editorial staff that has shown the gall to challenge and criticize the administration of St.

Student Speaks

Christina Nystrom May 4, 2007
To the Editor: First of all, I would like to state that I believe SLU is a great school that fosters creativity and student growth, but the administration's newest attack against the U. News is appalling. Recently we have seen many changes around the university, spearheaded by the power-hungry, unapologetic Father Lawrence Biondi, that have been shocking.

Parent Expounds

Richard Benanti May 4, 2007
To the Editor: The editorial last week only scratched the surface of revealing the slimy, bloody underbelly that is Saint Louis University administration. For those of you who barely look at the newspaper and bound through life holding hands with Pollyanna, have a great life.

Sophomore Responds to Administrators

Rachel Allen May 4, 2007
To the Editor: My name is Rachel Allen and I am currently a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, a double major in English Creative Writing and Theology. I am writing to voice my concerns regarding the proposed changes to the University News and the negative effects I, like many other SLU students, believe they will have on the publication of our college newspaper.

Alum Examines “The Biondi Years”

Andrew Hahn May 4, 2007
To the Editor: Recent items in the newspapers and on TV have prompted me to ponder the effect of the Biondi years at Saint Louis University. While many will remember these past 20 years for the expansion and beautification of the campus, others will no doubt recall this era as one where the value of academics seemed to be trumped by sports programs and a lust for green space.

Students Analyze Freedom of Press

Ryan Yost Jenna Steege May 4, 2007
To the Editor: After 85 years of publication, The University News has been given an ultimatum: comply with a new charter or move entirely off campus and change its name. The timing of this ultimatum is no accident. Our student body's attention is focused on impending finals and the fast-approaching summer break.

Knights Commemorate Fish Fry Fundraising

Tim Wright April 27, 2007
To the Editor: Harsh rain and bitter cold, gusts of wind that nearly knocked people down, and even one day of the series that was canceled because of such harsh weather. No, this is not a reference to the World Series last October, but rather one to the recent Fish Fry hosted by the Knights of Columbus, Council #4561.

SLU Grad Promoted

Barbara Yelton April 27, 2007
To the Editor: One of SLU's finest, Andrew Kaelin, Class of 2003 has recently been recognized for outstanding achievements by Federated Insurance Company (headquarters: Owatonna, Minn.) and been promoted to a Group Health Insurance Specialist in the company's Indiana regional office.

SLU Joins WRC

United Students Against Sweats April 27, 2007
To the Editor: We the members of United Students Against Sweatshops would like to publicly commend all those who assisted us with our campaign to affiliate SLU with the Workers' Rights Consortium. We would like to first recognize Fr. Biondi, S.J. and the members of the PCC who took the time to listen to our proposal and took the next step to help ensure that SLU apparel remains sweatshop free.

OneWorld Not One Man

Jesse Sullivan April 27, 2007
To the Editor: OneWorld would not exist without the work and support of so many people, and nobody is more aware of that fact than I am. That is why, while I am honored that Fr. Biondi's monthly message included a great deal about me, I do not deserve all of the credit and praise I have received.

Gartland Responds

ROB GARTLAND April 27, 2007
To the Editor: If you're reading this, you probably have already heard about the article I wrote entitled "A Modest, Greek Proposal" published in The University News last week. As some of you also know, I got quite a response from it. At the Robert Randolph concert held on campus last Friday, I was approached by a large group of former members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Korean Student Association Comments

Korean Student Association April 20, 2007
To the Editor: We were profoundly shocked by the heinous nature of the shooting rampage that occurred at Virginia Tech this past Monday. Upon learning that the gunman was a legal U.S. resident with Korean background, many of us were overcome by a sentiment of embarrassment and disbelief.
