Griesedieck Hall Haunted House Prepares To Scare And Share

In recent history, Saint Louis University has been one of the main stages for contemporary tales of horror.

Stories of an exorcism held in the hallowed halls of the school’s older buildings have been the basis for several documentaries dealing with the supernatural as well as a blockbuster film.

These stories have also led to the fear of going into certain rooms of DuBourg hall for many University employees.

This fall the element of fear is also being toted around campus. However, this is not just for the sake of instilling fear into unsuspecting students. It is for one of the Jesuit ideals of helping provide for the less fortunate.

One group participating in this act of charity is the 12th floor of Griesedieck Hall. This energetic group of young men plans to host a haunted house on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999.

“I thought of the idea while I was on the elevator one day,” said Eric Dupont, community development assistant for the floor. “I later ran it buy some of the guys, and they agreed to it.”

The floor has some former residents from Scholars’ House, a residence hall that was torn down over the summer to make way for Cook Hall, the addition to the School of Business and Adminstration.

Last year Scholars’ House was home to a very successful haunted house.

The haunted-house event will include a variety of thrills planed to chill those who take the elevator ride up to 12G.

“We’ll be using a lot of tools,”said Jay Willibrand, one of the event’s organizers.

When asked if he would like to elaborate on the comment, Willibrand responded by saying, “I don’t want to ruin it, but there will be a lot of surprises.”

For the past month the floor has been working on collecting various bits of Halloween paraphernalia. Items range from scary face paint to more sophisticated devices that use electricity.

“We are expecting a lot of people,” Dupont said. “Flyers have been posted in every residence hall.”

Admission to the haunted house is $2, and all of the money goes to support Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, located just south of the Medical School.

Another group working to make Halloween memorable for students is the International Student Federation, which is taking students to the haunted house Terrorvision on Friday, Oct. 29. The group of about 50 people will be heading out from Griesedieck Hall at 8 p.m. After visiting the haunted house, the group will go out for food and more fun.

This event, along with the Griesedieck-12 haunted house, hopes to help others have a good time as well as give the less fortunate a chance to share it.
