After a month of rehearsal, the University Theatre is ready to open its second production of the year.
Written by Ivan Turgenev and adapted by Irish playwright Brian Freel, “A Month in the Country” is a comical Russian story of a woman named Natalya competing for the affections of her son’s tutor.
Director and Professor of Theatre Mark Landis says that “A Month in the Country” is not only a story of love, but promises to be a rich collection of issues prevalent in today’s society.
“It’s really about stuff that I find most interesting in life,” Landis said. “It’s about what we want in life.
“It is a very wise and compassionate play. It’s about things that make life interesting. It’s a lot of wonderful stuff.”
Cast members Sarah Hund and Charlie Barron agreed about the richness and cleverness of the script.
“There are a lot of interesting character relationships in the play, especially the way love affairs work out,” Hurd said.
“The entire play deals with issues that are prevalent in society today,” Barron said.
Landis added that he found something more exciting than the play itself during rehearsal.
“One of the most gratifying things is that wonderful things happened throughout practices,” Landis said. “Relationships between characters are so intimate and rich.
