Five losses for every one win. That is the ratio for the Saint Louis University softball team.
The Billikens (8-40 overall and 2-13 in Conference USA) have struggled all spring in C-USA’s inaugural softball season and this weekend was no different.
SLU went down to the University of Alabama-Birmingham and dropped all three contests. The Bills managed only a single run during the series.
“We went in anticipating winning all three games,” said Coach Jim Molloy. “We didn’t hit as well as we could have.”
The Billikens were beaten in the first game 4-0.
“In the second game they just hit well,” Molloy said.
In game one UAB ace Kerri Foster kept the Billikens guessing wrong as she allowed only two hits. Beth Puttcamp and Erin Jefferey put the only hits on the board for SLU.
Kristin Rossi pitched a masterpiece of a game, giving up a single earned run and striking out four Blazers.
In the second game UAB broke out the whooping stick and went to work on the Bills.
The Blazers battered SLU 10-1. Beth Yagge drove in what would be the only Billiken run scored during the series.
The Billikens got their heads on straight for the third game. The Blazers were only able to rattle off two hits during the final game, but one was a home run.
The Bills managed to put up seven hits, but couldn’t bring anyone across the plate. Yet again the Billikens were held down by UAB’s pitching star, Foster.
“We played errorless ball, we were a better ball club on Sunday,” Molloy said. “They were consistent, and that’s been our problem all year.”
Next up for the Billikens is the Louisville Cardinals. SLU is looking to finish the season with double digits in the win column and will have a hard time against a solid Louisville team.
The Cardinals are 30-22 overall and 7-7 in C-USA and have won five of their last six. They are led by freshman Melissa Jacobo and Tara McClure. Jacobo has the team high batting average of .336 and has popped four homers. McClure posted 10 wins and a microscopic ERA of 1.01.
“They’ve done well all year and in conference. If we play to our potential we should do well,” Molloy said.
After this weekend’s season ending series, the Billikens will turn their attention toward the C-USA tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Billikens will be the six seed in the double-elimination tournament.
“We need to remain focused, and we should do well,” Molloy said.
