You’ve seen the shirts graciously worn around campus, but what exactly is the Saint Louis University Ultimate Team, or more commonly, SLUUT?
Ultimate frisbee is one of the newest student organizations on campus, and its popularity has grown since its inception over two years ago.
Senior captain Julian Meeks said, “We’ve made amazing progress in the last two years. We have excellent young leadership with many freshman stepping up and showing that they can help the team compete.”
Ultimate frisbee is a quick sport using skills found in basketball, soccer and football to provide for an exciting, fast-paced sport that people across the country have grown to love.
This fall season, SLUUT will be traveling to two tournaments to display their skills. The first of these tournaments is coming this weekend.
The team will be traveling to Chicago to play in the Windy City Rampage.
The Bills are guaranteed to play six games, with the possibility of more, depending on how well the team performs. The tournament will be played at Schiller Park, 20 minutes north of downtown Chicago.
The Billikens are looking to make some noise in the tournament, and they have the experience behind them to work with.
Returning to the team this season are seniors Meeks, Matt Krings, Lawrence Hwong, Nathan Gard and Katie Kasdorf; juniors Michael Czuba and Maria Kronk. SLUUT should field a quality and competitive squad.
The team is moderated by Fr. Bob Phillips, S.J.
The team will look to freshman Kevin Cunningham and Tim Schmitt to provide strong leadership in the freshman class.
SLUUT has been practicing since the beginning of the school year, and they are ready to take on some competition.
The team played a scrimmage against a superb Washington University team and played well despite a 14-7 loss.
Meeks said, “It was good for us to scrimmage against Wash U. We were able to face another team rather than just our own inter-squad games.”
Hwong said, “We’re really excited about the upcoming tournament.
“The scrimmage against Wash U. really helped us to prepare for the tournament this weekend.”
He added, “With the team we have this year, we expect to do really well in Chicago and make St. Louis University proud.”
The team will also be traveling to Arkansas the last weekend of October to participate in the 10th annual Harvest Moon Classic.
“I’m excited to see the growth of such a wonderful sport,” Meeks said.
“With a lot of our team being comprised of underclassmen, the ultimate frisbee team looks like it will be around for a while,” Meeks said.
“One thing that would be nice in the future is a full-size practice field, so that we can utilize all of our skills and players,” Meeks said.
