Regulation play was not sufficient for the Billiken field hockey team and conference opponent Davidson to settle the score on Sunday, Sept. 30. But in overtime, the Bills were victorious, bringing their record to 3-8.
The Wildcats Kathleen Fenn scored a goal 26 minutes into the game, providing the only goal of the half and giving Davidson a 1-0 lead at the half.
“We started off a little slow in the first half,” said coach Shannon West. “Specifically, we were outshot, but we came out really pumped up and played with a lot of energy.”
Senior Heather Mattingly proved her coach right. With only three minutes gone in the second half, Mattingly scored an unassisted goal on a corner to tie the score. When both teams failed to score again, the game was sent to overtime. With 8:23 left on the clock, Mattingly set up her teammates, Lindsay Lombardo and Keri Brunner, for a two-on-one against the goalie. With a pass from her teammate, Lombardo was able to score not only her first goal of the season but, more importantly, the game winner for the Bills.
“It was awesome. It was like it was in slow motion. It was a perfect pass from Keri, so I just finished it,” Lombardo said.
“The two-on-one was executed perfectly,” West said.
“Everyone was hugging and cheering, and there were a lot of smiles all around,” said Lombardo.
“Our spirits were really high,” West said. “It was great to see everyone enjoying the win and finally see the results of all our hard work.”
The Billikens will face Lindenwood again at home on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Anheuser Busch Center. Also, the game against Indiana has been rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 14.
