Time to hibernate for the winter.
Other than the cold, the Billiken golf team has nothing to hide from.
The Billiken golf team finished their season over the weekend. They had a solid finish to the fall season, placing seventh in a 13-team field at the Pepsi/SMS Challenge in Springfield, Mo., last week.
Junior Adam Trower became the sixth Billiken to shoot under 69 in tournament play.
He shot a 68 in the second round, though he couldn’t duplicate it in the third round. Trower posted an 83 to finish 32nd in the field.
He ended the season with an average score of 75.9.
Senior Scott Fann and freshman Evan Frederick led the Bills by tying for 21st place out of 80 golfers.
After a 78 in the first round, Frederick steadied himself, shooting a 71 and 75 in the second and third rounds, respectively.
Frederick also had a strong finish at the Eastern Illinois Ironhorse Intercollegiate on Oct. 17, coming in 11th out of 90 golfers. His 75.5 stroke average is the team’s second best for this fall.
“Frederick is proving to be an important asset to the Billikens,” said coach Ed Schwent.
Like Frederick, Fann was unable to tee-it-up strong in Springfield, turning in a 79 in round one. His game improved in round two with a 72 and he shot a 73 in the final round.
Fann hopes to win a tournament. The spring will be his last chance. He came close early in the season at the Drury Intercollegiate, placing second. It was the best individual round for the Bills this fall.
Senior Justin Haupt led the Bills after the first round last week, with a 74. After an 80 in the second round and a 72 in round three, he ranked 25th in the field.
Going into the tournament Schwent thought the team would have a good chance at winning. With too many first-round scores hovering around 80, the team was unable to make this happen.
“My goal for the spring is to finish in the top three at a couple of tournaments,” said Schwent. This happened once this fall, at the Drury Intercollegiate, where the Billikens placed third.
Schwent said he plans to schedule a home tournament in mid-April at the Gateway National in Matteson, Ill.
