The CSCHL Division I Conference playoff games last weekend brought the season to a close for the Saint Louis University hockey team.
Friday night SLU had a bye and watched as Eastern Michigan University beat the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 2-0 and Ohio University beat the University of Illinois 3-2. This set the brackets for the second-round games.
On Saturday, Iowa State, the number-one seed, defeated Ohio 3-0. SLU fought hard against EMU but lost 3-2 in sudden-death overtime. SLU freshman Dan O’Brien led with the first goal of the game. With EMU ranked sixth in the nation, SLU goalie Casey Martin showed how well he could do under pressure.
At the end of regulation, the score remained 2-2. Early in the overtime period, EMU scored off and won the game.
Sunday brought the consolation game between Ohio State and SLU, as well as the championship game between Iowa State and EMU.
In the championship game, Iowa State dominated EMU. The game ended in a 7-0 victory for Iowa State and a second shutout of the playoffs for their goalie, Ryan Westbrook. Westbrook was also named the MVP.
The consolation game was possibly the most exciting game of the playoffs. SLU beat Ohio State 1-0. Freshman Geoff Schuessler covered the goal and had a shut out stopping 34 shots. In a three-on-one, Matt McComy passed the puck to Jordan Jones, who faked-out the Ohio State goalie for the winning shot.
For much of the game, SLU was forced to use forwards on defense because of injuries to their normal defensemen.
Tim Niedbalski, Chris Peterson and Nathan Hirsch moved to defense and kept Ohio State from scoring.
“Peterson played an unbelievable game and was never out of position on the ice,” coach John Bosch said.
