The Saint Louis University tennis teams picked up a pair of wins over the Easter weekend. The men easily quieted the Illinois-Chicago Flames 7-0, while the women edged past the Louisville Cardinals 4-3.
On the men’s side, all six singles players picked up wins on their home courts Saturday afternoon, and the only Billiken loss of the outing came in doubles play.
In singles play, No. 1 Ikaika Jobe defeated Nick Bodmer 6-2, 6-4. In the No. 2 spot, Lance Vodicka breezed past Ken Howrey 6-1, 6-1.
Thomas Kwong defeated Wede Clark 6-4, 6-1 in the third singles bracket, while Taylor Curran slid past Amol Desai 6-2, 7-6 for the No. 4 singles win.
Sanjeev Paramanathan easily defeated Omar Husain at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-4, and Michael Hoosien defeated Will Karydakis in the No. 6 bracket to make it a perfect outing for the Bills in singles play.
In doubles, the No. 1 pair of Jobe/Vodicka dropped Bodmer/Howrey 8-0, and in the No. 2 spot, the team of de Larzac/Curran defeated the Clark/Desai team 8-3.
The only loss of the afternoon came at the No. 3 doubles match when the team of Kwong/Hsieh lost a hardfought match to UIC’s Husain/Karydakis 9-8.
On the women’s side, No. 1 singles player Julie Siemers defeated Melissa San Martin of Louisville on Sunday 6-0, 6-1, and No. 2 Vicki Kehner defeated Kelly Kehner in a three-game tie breaker.
Amy O’Handley dropped her two games to Julie Penn 6-3, 6-2. While just under O’Handley in the No. 4 spot, Melissa Cutler defeated Kelly Taylor in the tiebreaker game.
No. 5 singles player Rebecca Steer was edged by Paige Eber and lost 6-2, 6-4. No. 6 Kristen Doyle lost 6-2, 6-3 to Mary Ann Torres.
The No. 1 doubles team of Siemers/O’Handley came up big against San Martin/Kiehner, winning the match 8-4.
Zielinski and Cutler won against Penn/Eber 8-4 in the No. 2 bracket, while the No. 3 team of Steer and Doyle lost to Torres and Taylor by a score of 8-3.
The lady Bills lost 5-2 to Indiana State Saturday afternoon. The only wins came from Siemers in the No. 1 singles slot and O’Handley at No. 3. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Siemers/O’Handley lost by default, as did the No. 3 team of Zielinski/Cutler. The Steer/Doyle duo lost 8-4.
This weekend, the women host their final C-USA showdown of the season, taking on Memphis on Friday and DePaul on Saturday. The men travel to Memphis to face New Orleans, Memphis, Troy, and Murray State in tournament play.
