Golf
The Saint Louis University golf team improved in the final round of the Hillman Robbins Memorial tournament this weekend in Memphis and finished the outing in 11th place overall.
The Bills started the two-day affair with unusually low scores from their leaders. In the second day of play, Evan Frederick improved 10 spots to finish in 12th place, while David Perritt finished just behind Frederick in 17th place.
This weekend, the Billikens will travel to Brandenburg, Ky., to compete at the Olde English Golf Club on Friday and Saturday.
Swimming and Diving
The swimming and diving season opened this weekend in the Billikens’ first meet against the Washington University Bears.
The women rallied late in the meet to overcome the Bears and were strengthened by wins from several individuals. Alice Atepeter won the 200 freestyle, Kristen Lowe placed first in the 100 backstroke and Megan Cappellupo turned in a solid first place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Divers Kristi Cottrall and Tessa Truesdell took first and second place in the 1 meter diving event.
The men couldn’t get past the Bears despite solid performances all around. Steve Webb won the 1000 freestyle and Chris Johansen took first place in the 200 freestyle. Rich Sheridan won the 200 butterfly event, while the team of Webb, Johansen, Sheridan and Thomas Zenk placed first in the relay event. Bobby Wolf won the 1 meter diving event with a score of 269.2 points.
Men’s Tennis
The men’s tennis team had a solid showing at the Louisville Invitational this weekend. Thomas Kwong advanced to the semifinal round of the consolation match of the “A” singles bracket and lost a 9-8, 10-8 tiebreaker to Ian Bliss of West Virginia.
The duo of Tom de Larzac and Taylor Curran lost in the final round of the “A” doubles competition in a 8-5 decision.
The team competed without standouts Ikaika Jobe and Lance Vodicka, who participated in the ITA All-American Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., Jobe won his first three pre-qualifying matches before losing in the third day of play to Ivor Laverake of Baylor 6-2, 6-3. Vodicka won his first match and lost his second to Vanderbilt’s Josh Tarkoff.
Basketball
Saturday, the men’s and women’s basketball teams will being preparing for the 2002-2003 season with Mid-day Madness.
The event will feature scrimmages at 12:15 p.m. and at 2 p.m. between the teams.
On Friday, members of the men’s team, women’s team, coaching staffs and spirit teams will be outside the Bauman-Eberhardt Athletic Center to help with a variety of activities geared towards generating student interest in the upcoming season.
KPNT-FM 105.7 will be on hand and broadcasting from SLU while students shoot baskets and attempt to win prizes.
The men’s team will have their first exhibition game on Nov. 8 at the Savvis Center and will return to action on Nov. 19 for another exhibition game before the regular season begins.
Men’s Club Soccer
The Saint Louis University men’s soccer club (known as the Toros) improved to 4-0-2 in the Mid-America College Soccer League after blanking Pittsburg State 3-0, followed by a 1-1 split with Kansas State.
The team hopes to retain its second place slot or improve in order to gain a berth in the regional tournament in Austin, Texas.
The team will travel to Lawrence, Kansas, this weekend to play MACSL rival University of Kansas.
They will finish their regular season with a game against Central Missouri State on Oct. 19 in Warrensburg.
