Field Hockey
The Saint Louis University field hockey team defeated Lindenwood in a grudge match yesterday afternoon. The Billikens avenged their earlier loss to the Lions with a 6-1 win on their Senior Day game.
Alisa Hebert began the Billiken attack with a goal and was followed by a goal from Carin Boone off a penalty corner.
The Bills dominated the rest of the match offensively, with later goals from Boone, Lindsay Lombardo, Pam Martin and Ellen Rapp.
Billiken goalkeeper Leslie Kearns did not make any saves in the first half but gave up Lindenwood’s lone goal before turning the net over to Julie Moeckel.
Sunday, the Bills will travel to Southwest Missouri State before heading west to Stanford for the NorPac Tournament on Nov. 7.
Golf
Adam Trower led the Billiken golf team to a 12th place finish at the Southwest Missouri State Pepsi Challenge last weekend at the Highland Spring Country Club.
Trower opened the tournament shooting a 77 and 75 on the first day and finished the event with a 76. David Perritt began the tournament with a solid 75 and 76 before dipping to an 80 in the final round, finishing 44th overall.
John Campbell took 65th place in the tournament and Dusty Federko rounded out the Bills’ squad with a 73rd-place finish.
Hockey Club
The Billikens won the Fourth Annual Catholic Invitational Tournament hosted by John Carroll in Cleveland last weekend, marking their third straight title in that tournament.
The Billikens swept the weekend with three straight wins, starting Friday evening, downing the host in a 7-3 decision. Saturday, Mercy Hurst fell to the Billikens’ dominating offensive line in a 10-7 blowout, and Sunday the Billikens dropped Niagara 5-1.
Tim Niedbalski was named tournament MVP and received All-Tournament recognition along with John Malaney and Mike Reid.
The Bills head into this weekend’s pair of games against No. 8 University of Michigan-Dearborn ranked 15th in the nation by the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The games will be played at the Chesterfield Ice Arena, and to support the Food Drive, admission will be free Friday night with three canned goods.
Tennis
The men’s and women’s tennis teams participated in the 2002 Omni Hotels Region V Championship on Oct. 21.
Lance Vodicka defeated Derek Boland from the University of Evansville 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 64 before losing to Ryan Livesay of Tulsa 6-4, 6-3. Ikaika Jobe advanced the farthest out of all the Billikens, winning against Paul Craigen from Bradley and Drake’s Filipe Motenegro in the round of 64 and round of 32. Jobe lost in the round of 16 to Indiana State’s Lovre Brajkovic 6-3, 6-3.
Melisa Lemus was the best finisher on the women’s team at the regional meet, defeating Melissa Medieta from Oklahoma 6-1, 6-2. Vicki Zielinski lost to Air Force’s Katherine Bushey 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Cross Country
The cross country team had a strong showing at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational on Oct. 19, in Kenosha, Wis.
The women finished in 12th place overall, anchored by Aimee Walther and Janelle Decker, who finished 28th and 66th respectively. Walther clocked a 19:09 for the course, while Decker turned in a time of 19:37. Behind the two were Megan Irwin, Emily Zimmerman and Sarah Moberg, with times of 19:58, 20:10 and 20:14, respectively.
The men were led by the team’s underclassmen to a 15th place finish. Joe Porter was the best finisher for the Billikens, claiming 74th place with a time of 27:04. Pat Henchy finished the eight kilometer course in 27:17, just ahead of Mike Isaac’s 27:33. Mike McCaslin and Mike Propheter rounded out the Bills’ top five with times of 27:34 and 29:00, respectively.
