In an announcement that shocked absolutely no one, the Northern Pacific Conference named Lindsay Lombardo to its first team All-Conference squad.
Lombardo is the undoubted leader of the Billikens and has been for the past three years. She plays offense and defense with incredible skill and fervor and paces the Billikens on the field from her central midfield position. Still, one would never know it by talking to her.
Lombardo grew up with field hockey. Her older sister, Katie, played field hockey both in high school and then in college, also playing for the Bills. Lindsay first started playing back in the 7th grade in a St. Louis spring indoor league.
“We only got to play one game a week, but it was still a good time,” Lombardo said.
About the time her sister was moving on to SLU, Lindsay moved on to the high school circuit, playing at her sister’s alma mater, Nerinx Hall. Lombardo was a three-sport star in high school, lettering in field hockey, soccer and cross-country. There was, however, never any doubt that field hockey always came first.
“I just love it. It’s a great sport that’s challenging and different from those that most people play,” Lombardo said.
At SLU, Lombardo was named to second-team all-conference as a freshman.
She netted seven goals and two assists that year. She continued her emergence last year for the Bills, scoring a pair of goals, one of which was in overtime to beat division rival Davidson.
This year she added five goals to her stat line while continuing to develop and polish her game and, in doing so, helped to make the Bills a better team. Even after winning all-conference accolades and performing at the highest level, Lombardo isn’t satisfied.
“I want us to win a lot more my senior year. That’s the big thing. I think it would also be cool to make an all-tournament team,” Lombardo said.
Lombardo even has a couple things in mind for her days after field hockey at SLU.
“I’d like to go to med school,” Lombardo said. “I might take a year off to give a year of service with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, but after that I would definitely like to be heading to med school.”
