When it rains it pours. Especially when you are under water.
Last weekend, the Saint Louis University men’s and women’s swim teams traveled up to Bowling Green to take on a flurry of competitors in a series of dual meets. Neither came away with a win.
“After the way we’ve been swimming, we were definitely disappointed that we couldn’t win last weekend,” junior Thomas Zenk said.
The losses for the women’s team, coming against Bowling Green, 93-20, Louisville, 82-31, and Notre Dame, 89-24, were the team’s first losses of the year.
The men’s team also dropped their dual against Conference USA rival Louisville, 83-29, as well as falling to Cleveland State, 96-12.
“We were missing a few people last weekend so that didn’t help us at all,” Zenk said.
The women’s team came into the weekend a perfect 12-0 in dual competition for the season. They have been led by sophomore Megan Capellupo.
Capellupo earned C-USA Swimmer of the Week honors two weeks ago when she helped the Bills defeat Western Illinois in SLU’s final home meet of the season.
She finished first in the 200-meter breast stroke, and, in doing so, broke her own school record in the event. Capellupo is the first Billiken swimmer to earn C-USA Swimmer of the Week honors.
“Megan has swam really well this season. She definitely has set a strong pace for the team,” Zenk said.
The men’s team entered the Bowling Green meet with a record of 8-1, with its only loss having come at the hands of cross-town rival Washington University by a miniscule three-point margin.
The top finishers for the Bills on the women’s side of the lane rope this past weekend were junior diver Tessa Truesdell, who finished second on the three-meter board, and fellow diver senior Kristi Cottral, who finished sixth on the one-meter board. Freshman Alice Altepeter finished sixth in the 100-meter breast stroke.
On the men’s side, freshman Christopher Johansen finished a team-best third place in the 1000-meter freestyle event.
There were four other men’s swimmers who finished fourth place in their respective events: Chris Clement in the 50-meter free stroke event, Bryan Beischel in the 100-meter breast stroke, Rich Sheridan in the 400-meter individual medley and Mark Wozny in the one meter board.
