The Saint Louis University swim team rounded out the season with a victorious Saturday, winning a narrow 125-112 on the men’s side and a decisive 140-107 on the women’s side. The win boosts the Billiken men to 12-4 and the women to 14-4 heading into the Conference USA Championships in two weeks.
SLU men took five first-place medals, three awarded to freshman swimmers. Freshman John Stoneburner finished first in both the 200-meter individual medley, and the 500-meter freestyle with times of 2:00.69 and 4:47.31, respectively.
Concerning the victorious Saturday, Stoneburner said, “I was really impressed with how the team came together at the end to come out on top.”
Sophomore Bobby Wolf also finished first in the one-and-three-meter diving. Steve Webb took first in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:18.62.
On the women’s team, Marissa Mackos proved unbeatable in the 1000-meter freestyle, coming from behind in closing laps to claim gold. Mackos also took first in the 500-meter free.
Other first-place finishes came from Megan Capellupo who took first in the 200 individual medley and 200-meter butterfly with times of 2:12.58 and 2:19.13. Senior diver Kristi Cottral won both the one- and three-meter diving events for the third-straight meet, and freshman Kelly Tessar took first with times of 2:13.23 in the 200 back and 2:27.87 in the 200 breast.
Tessar was honored as the league’s Swimmer of the Week, while Cottral was named C-USA Diver of the Week.
