Basketball
Earlier this week, men’s basketball coach Brad Soderberg announced another addition to the current recruiting class for the 2003-2004 basketball roster. Monday, Soderberg announced that Bryce Husak, a 7-foot center from Mt. Vernon, Iowa signed a national letter of intent shortly after his visit to Saint Louis University last week.
Husak originally signed with Elon University in North Carolina during the early signing period, but was released from his letter of intent after the head coach left the school. At Mt. Vernon High School, he averaged 17 points per game, 11 rebounds per game and nine blocks. Soderberg is pleased with Husak’s ability to run the floor and his coordination for a big man of his size–he is 7-feet tall when standing barefoot and 250 pounds.
Soderberg does not expect Husak to come in and play as many minutes as his predecessor Kenny Brown did this year. Instead, he expects to work with Husak to groom him to be the type of player that will fit SLU’s program. There is a possibility that Husak will take a redshirt his first year at SLU.
Field Hockey
The Saint Louis University field hockey team participated in the annual 7-Side Tournament, hosted by the University of Iowa. The Billikens defeated Southwest Missouri State University in a score of 2-1 and tied Northwestern University at one. The Bills suffered a 1-0 loss in their rematch with SMS and dropped a 2-0 downer to the host.
Golf
The Saint Louis University golf team crept from 13th to 12th place Tuesday afternoon at the Conference USA Tournament in Tampa, Fla. Freshman David Perritt shot 70, the lowest score of the team for the afternoon, which bumped him into 37th place. Sophomore Evan Frederick continued to lead the Billikens as the 14th-place golfer after two rounds. In both the first and second round, Frederick posted a score of 73.
Men’s Tennis
The men’s tennis team wrapped up a disappointing showing at the Conference USA Tournament last weekend in Milwaukee. The Billikens dropped a first-round decision to East Carolina University, with only two wins, coming from No. 1 singles player Ikaika Jobe and No. 3 singles player Thomas Kwong. Jobe won his match against Brad Sullivan in a tiebreaker with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 11-9. Kwong defeated Paulo Baumer 6-2, 6-3. No doubles matches were played since, ECU had already sealed the victory in singles competition.
Prior to the loss in the ninth-place round, the Billikens lost a first-round match to Charlotte and won a consolation round against Marquette.
The lone Billiken win in the Charlotte match was claimed by de Larzac, who defeated Christofer Bowman 6-4, 6-1. Against Marquette, Jobe, Vodicka and de Larzac won their singles matches, while each of the doubles teams won to claim the doubles point.
