Bills sweep home tournament

The Saint Louis University women’s soccer team remains
undefeated after hosting the Toys for Tots Tournament last weekend.
The Billikens came away with a 1-0 win Friday night against
Indiana, and they also won on Sunday against Air Force 1-0 in
double overtime. “It was a lot of fun to host the tournament and we
were really excited we were able to win it too,” said Jamie Perry
.

In the first half of the game against Indiana, both teams took
four shots on the goal, but neither team was able to score.

The second half looked to be in the Hoosiers favor, as they out
shot the Bills 5-3. Indiana almost scored in the 63rd minute of the
game, but the Bills’ keeper, sophomore Amanda Martin, was able to
make the save.

The Bills were finally able to score a goal in the 77th minute
of the game, when sophomore Kelly Ferguson lifted the ball into the
penalty area and freshman Dee Guempel took it off the bounce and
headed the ball in the net for her first career goal.

The Hoosiers looked to tie the game when one of their girls
found herself with space in the box in the game’s 87th minute only
to have her shot blocked by a Billiken defender. “Our defenders did
an excellent job after we scored keeping Indiana from tying the
game,” Perry said. “This was a big game for us, they are a big
rival and Kara transferred from there, so there were a lot of
emotions going into the game.”

On Sunday the Bills took on Air Force who had also just come off
a 1-0 win against Army Friday night. The Bills needed overtime to
finish off the Falcons, 1-0 .The Bills out-shot the Falcons 21-4.
The Air Force keeper was forced to make eight saves, six in the
second half. In spite of the unevenness in shots taken, the Falcons
almost found themselves in the lead in the 61st minute. One Falcon
player sent a long ball ahead to Leigh-Anne Withers, who found
space in the Billiken defense.

She looked like she would be alone with Martin, but a SLU
defender rushed back to take the ball away before Withers could
take a shot.

SLU’s best chance at ending the standoff in regulation was when
came in the 75th minute when Guempel stole the ball from a Falcon
defender and sent a pass ahead to Anna Schuch, whose speed sent her
past the defense.

The Falcon’s keeper came out to challenge Schuch, but another
defender was able to keep the ball out of the goal when Schuch
tried to shoot it in. “Coach gave some tips, we needed to focus and
finish. We had opportunities to score and we just needed to finish
them,” Perry said.

The first overtime showed the Bills many good looks, but they
were not able to convert any shots to goals. On their 13th corner
kick of the afternoon, the Bills were finally able to score.
Courtney Hulcer served the ball from the left corner, only to have
the Falcons’ keeper knock it away.

Hulcer ran the ball down and quickly sent the ball back into the
goal area where freshman, Schuch, headed the ball to score. Martin
picked up her third shutout this season and the Bills improved to
3-0-0. Kelly Ferguson was named tournament MVP and four SLU
players- Ferguson, Guempel, Annie Lucier, and Kara Kornfeld- were
selected to the All- Tournament team.

The Bills first road trip of the season will be this weekend as
they travel to a tournament in Princeton, NJ.

“There are more fans that you know here, but we are always
excited to play and can get pumped wherever we are,” Perry said
about their first road game.

SLU will face Penn at 4 p.m. on Friday and takes on Princeton on
Sunday, at 1:30 p.m.
