Classics in the making

Bevo Mill
4947 Gravois, 481-2626

Originally built by Adolphus Busch as a pit stop for the family
on the way back to Grant’s Farm from work, this urban windmill is
an Anheuser-Busch shrine and a South Side landmark.

Enjoy a Budweiser and saurbraten, or a Michelob with potato
pancakes. Although pricey, the excellent German cuisine and decor
make dinner well worth it.

Lemp Mansion
3322 DeMenil Place, 664-6033

If you like having lunch in a spooky 19th-century mansion filled
with antiques, then the Lemp Mansion is for you. You may even get
to dine in the room where four members of the Lemp family committed
suicide.

India’s Rasoi
4965 Laclede 361-6911

St. Louis is a hotbed of fantastic Italian restaurants, but
after a few months of pasta, you may find yourself in the mood for
something different. India’s Rasoi is the perfect solution. The
prices aren’t cheap (around $10-$14 per person), but they are quite
reasonable for the size of the portions and the quality of
service.

Guiseppe’s
4141 S. Grand, 832-3779

No trendy Central West End dining or fashionable nouveau
portions here. Only delicious food in a 1970s Knights of Columbus
parish center setting. Great pasta, excellent spedini and moderate
prices make Guiseppe’s one of St. Louis’ best kept secrets. But
it’s only open until Labor Day.

Silk Road Chinese Buffet
510 N. Euclid, 367-9370

The Silk Road offers a wide selection of Chinese cuisines. With
a large buffet and excellent service, this restaurant will delight
the appetite. The atmosphere differs from many restaurants in its
quiet simplicity. The buffet price is comparable to other Chinese
restaurants.

Pho Grand
3195 S. Grand, 664-7435

Cheap food doesn’t need to come in a bag with a side of fries.
Pho Grand, specializing in Vietnamese fare, is located in the South
Grand neighborhood, and offers dozens of entrees under six dollars.
The service is speedy but the atmosphere is calming. Vegetarians
will find ample selection, as will meat lovers. Don’t expect to pop
in and out though if you show up at peak dinner hours. Pho Grand is
as popular as it is delicious and budget-friendly.

Mom’s Deli
4412 Jaimeson, 644-1198

For those of you who agree that the sandwich is a sacred
creation, Mom’s Deli in South City is a lunchtime landmark. There
is nothing that really needs explaining about Mom’s–good lunch
meat and all the fixings, served up better than your own mom
makes.
