Maybe it really is true that good things come to those who
wait.
After waiting out a long 10-game stretch to pick up a win,
things might be starting to come together for the Saint Louis
University field hockey team.
Saturday afternoon, the Billikens picked up their first win of
the season with a 3-2 win over the Davidson University
Wildcats.
The Bills’ luck didn’t carry over into the second Northern
Pacific Conference game of the weekend;,however, when the Bills
dropped a 5-0 heartbreaker against Pacific University on their home
turf at the Anheuser-Busch Center.
Pacific began running the Billikens into the turf just 12
minutes inside the first half. Pacific continued to dominate the
entire game and notched two more goals before the period came to an
end.
In the second half, the Billikens were unable to contain
Pacific’s offense, which scored another two goals to ice the game
and put it out of reach at 5-0.
Billiken keeper Julie Moeckel made five saves, while sophomore
keeper Meredith Boyle came off the bench to stop two shots in the
second half.
In Saturday’s thriller, the Wildcats beat the Billikens to the
scoreboard and netted a goal 15 minutes into the half.
SLU freshman Michelle Sinclair answered back five minutes later
with a goal to knot the game at one apiece.
“Overall, I was very happy with today’s match and the players’
performance and intensity,” said coach Maria Whitehead in a press
release.
Though Whitehead was not pleased with the final 20 minutes of
play, she is glad to have picked up a victory for the beginning of
a homestretch.
Kristin Lueders gave SLU the advantage when she blasted a
perfect shot between the pipes merely eight minutes into the second
half of play.
After four minutes of back and forth play between the NorPac
rivals, senior co-captain Lindsay Lombardo banked the game winner
when she put the ball past Davidson’s goalkeeper, Sarah Nolen.
Davidson attempted to rally late in the half and managed to
collect one final goal of the outing, but the Wildcats could not
mount a comeback sufficient to overcome the Billikens’ lead and
ultimately fell short in their attempt.
This weekend, the Billikens will host Radford for a pair of
matches at the A-B Center on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by
Tuesday’s 1 p.m. tangle to round out the weekend’s matchup.
