The Saint Louis University field hockey team marked the final
game of their season with a rare victory to highlight senior night
and give them some momentum heading into the post-season Northern
Pacific Conference tournament.
Saturday afternoon, SLU defeated the Southwest Missouri State
Bears by a score of 3-2 in an overtime affair for a third win of
the season, moving their record to 3-14.
Also notably, seniors Lindsay Lombardo and Alisa Hebert made
contributions on their day of honor. Both recorded assists with
Lombardo adding a goal to the tally as well.
The Bills initially fell behind, giving up goals in both the
first and second half. SLU, however, took capitalized in second
half opportunities, scoring twice on four shots. Lombardo’s goal
came first, followed by Stephani Wehrman netting the tying score
with just minutes remaining.
Yet, it was sophomore Carin Boone who came through in overtime.
Two minutes in, Lombardo dropped a pass into Boone who ended the
game with her fourth goal of the season.
The only blemish on the victory came when midfielder Kristen
Leuders suffered a grade two concussion.
SLU will be without the freshman who was just named to second
team of the All-Conference squad for the entirety of the
tournament.
Just one day earlier, the Bills played Northwestern with the
Wildcats defeating SLU with a shutout score of 7-0.
The game in Evansville, Ill. marked the team’s final game away
from home. Northwestern scored four times in the first half and
netted three more scores in the final 45 minutes.
Both Megan Small and Christine Nannicelli of Wildcats headed the
stat sheets, both with two goal performances.
Up next, SLU will be hosting the NorPac tournament at their
usual game site, the Anheuser-Busch Center. The tournament will
feature league members Appalachian State, Davidson, Radford from
the East and Cal, Pacific, SMS and Stanford in the West in a round
robin-style tournament.
SLU will be met with the task of opening with the tournament
with the top team, Cal.
“We’re really excited to have this tournament in St. Louis. In
the past we’ve be able to give ranked teams a game; so, we’d love
to go out and surprise them” said Lombardo.
“It was a really fun thing [to win the on senior night]. Even
more than that, SMS has always been a big rival of ours. Back when
I was a freshman, we would split games with them. In recent years
we’d been loosing to them, so it was nice to get back and win a
game” Lombardo said.
“It makes us kind of nervous to be without Leuders, but we’re
all pretty excited to come off a win; it’s only the third time
that’s happened all season” Lombardo added.
SLU will try their chances at another first, making it two wins
in a row, come tomorrow.
Yet, even if the Bills loose, they still have another chance to
play either Stanford or Appalachian State on Friday afternoon.
