Having been involved in soccer from an early age, Saint Louis
University men’s soccer coach Dan Donigan made a name for himself
at the University of Connecticut.
As a Husky, he was able to show-off the skills that he had honed
his whole life. Starting with his freshman season in 1985, Donigan
improved every year, in not only goals and assists, but in maturity
and knowledge of the game. In his last three years at UCONN,
Donigan was an All-American and a First Team All-New England
forward three years straight. Donigan was also the Big East
Conference Northern Division Player of the year, making him one of
the most elite college soccer players in the nation at the
time.
Upon graduation from Connecticut in 1989, Donigan left with 110
points; 35 goals and 40 assists.
He currently ranks fifth in all-time scoring, second in assists,
and sixth in goals. Donigan received his degree in business
administration and is currently taking classes to obtain his
master’s in higher education.
After brief stints with various professional soccer teams,
including the St. Louis Steamers, the Milwaukee Wave and the
Rockford Raptors, Donigan realized his true potential and passion
was in the coaching ranks.
Donigan began his collegiate coaching career as a top assistant
at his alma mater, UCONN, in 1994.
He coached there through the 1996 season, after which he left to
come become an assistant at SLU. He coached under Bob Warming at
SLU and took over the head coaching position when Warming left to
take the head coaching position at Creighton University over three
years ago.
Donigan’s first season was 2001, and when he took over the
reigns, he became only the fifth coach in the history of Saint
Louis University men’s soccer.
In his four years as SLU’s coach, he has posted some outstanding
numbers. Aside from leading each of his teams to the NCAA
tournament, he has accumulated record-breaking win totals.
A career winning percentage above .800 and 33 wins in his first
two seasons are the best among any coach ever at SLU.
In his first season when he led the team to an 18-2-0 record, it
earned him Conference USA’s coach of the year. This year, he led a
freshman and sophomore laden squad to a 14-3-2 overall record,
along with recently earning a seven seed in the NCAA tournament
.
Starting eight underclassmen every game has taken its toll in
recent weeks, as fatigue sets in, and the team has only posted a
5-3-2 record in its last 10 games, after starting the season
6-0-0.
However, under Donigan’s command, SLU won both the regular
season conference title and the C-USA tournament title for the
fourth year in a row, a feat which is no small task.
