On Nov. 12, 2003, Saint Louis University men’s basketball coach
Brad Soderberg announced the signings of three talented local high
school seniors, Tommie Liddell, Luke Meyer and Dwayne Polk, to
National Letters of Intent.
Liddell, a 6-feet-4-inch swingman from across the river at East
St. Louis High School, is considered by local basketball experts as
one of–if not the best–senior in the St. Louis area.
After earning Second Team All-Metro honors last season as a
junior, Liddell is averaging 16.5 points per game along with 9.3
rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.
A 6-feet-5-inch guard from St. Francis Borgia High School in
Washington, Mo.
Meyer is among the St. Louis area’s leading scorers, averaging
28.7 points per game. He has been a four-year starter for the
Knights and has led the team in scoring each year.
While he has been known as a dangerous player throughout his
high school career, Meyer has certainly established himself as one
of the St. Louis area’s premier players this season, garnering him
a lot of attention from colleges across the country, including
Stanford.
Polk, a 5-feet-9-inch floor general from St. Louis-area
powerhouse Vashon High School, has also performed as a prime-time
player throughout his high school career. His team won the Missouri
4A Championship in his freshman and sophomore years while playing
alongside current Missouri guard, Jimmy McKinney, finishing both
seasons nationally ranked–third and fourth, respectively, by USA
TODAY. After being hampered with a knee injury as a junior, he has
regained his old form this season and has led the Wolverines to a
19-0 start to the season and a No. 6 ranking in the Midwest region
by USA TODAY.
Polk averages 14.1 points per game along with six assists and
three steals per game.
“We signed three kids who I really think are going to be fan
favorites and take our program to some new heights,” Soderberg said
the day after the signings.
The Billikens have yet to fill their final available
scholarship, a spot they will likely fill when their late signing
period begins within the coming weeks.
