The Saint Louis University swim teams rolled to easy victories
last Saturday at the St. Peters Rec Plex. The men’s team defeated
Lindenwood University by a score of 98-29 and Illinois Tech
91-36.
The women’s team picked up three victories, beating the
University of Arkansas Little-Rock 101-25, Illinois Tech 103-23,
and Lindenwood 103-29, respectively.
With the wins, the women improve to 16-3 for the season, while
the men improved to 11-8.
“Overall, the team swam pretty well. We’re all still kind of
tired with all of the training towards the end of the season,” said
sophomore swimmer Carter Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald finished last weekend’s meet with his best time of
the season in the 500-meter freestyle at 5:02.1, along with
anchoring the 800-meter freestyle relay.
Both teams dropped only two races all afternoon.
Notable performances for the men were turned in by sophomore
John Stoneburner, who broke his own school record in the 100-meter
breaststroke with a time of 59.78.
He also emerged victorious in the 200-meter freestyle and
100-meter backstroke.
Stoneburner has been a mainstay for the Billikens this season,
notching an astounding number of top-10 finishes in a handful of
events, including, but by no means limited to, the butterfly,
breaststroke and freestyle events.
And he is not just limited to the short races either, although
he has excelled in those for most of the season.
season has been fellow sophomore Christopher Johansen, who has
found a comfort zone and a winning kick in most of the distance
free-style events throughout the season for the Billikens.
Junior diver Bobby Wolf won both the one-and-three meter diving
events, thus completing the sweep for the Billikens.
“It wasn’t very close on Saturday, we can expect to see more
come conference,” Fitzgerald added.
For the women, junior Megan Capellupo was the lone swimmer in a
balanced effort to win multiple events, winning the 50-meter
freestyle and the 100-meter backstroke. Senior diver Tessa
Truesdell came away with victories in both diving competitions.
Both teams will conclude regular season play this weekend. On
Saturday, they will travel to Charleston, Illinois to battle
Eastern Ill. University.
The women’s team will conclude its regular season on Sunday
against Conference USA rival Tulane University.
The meet will be at 11:00 a.m. at the Simon Recreation
Center.
Later in the month, the C-USA championships will be held from
Feb. 26-28 in Houston, Texas.
“Heading into conference we’re all looking to put up our best
times of the year and get as many possible into the final heats.
We’ll be facing some strict competition, but if we can get some
swimmers into those night heats–we’ll be happy,”– Fitzgerald
said.
