Last weekend, the Saint Louis University softball team competed
in the University of Louisville Spring Tournament, closing out the
weekend with one win and three losses, leaving them at 9-20
overall. On Friday, the Billikens took on the Louisville Cardinals
for the fourth consecutive game and lost 11-0. After four scoreless
innings the Cardinals offense took over in the fifth scoring five
runs that broke the game open.
But the Billikens came back strong on Saturday, defeating Toledo
8-0 in the team’s first shutout of the season.
“We have a lot of fighters on the team,” said freshman pitcher
Elizabeth Nielsen. “You learn a lot from a loss and we are staying
positive. You just keep fighting and keeping coming back to
win.”
The Billikens offense dominated the game, coming out in the
first inning and scoring six runs. Nielsen led the team on defense
allowing only two hits in five innings.
The freshman pitcher has been a huge contributor on the season,
dominating the mound.
“I have played since I was seven or eight, and it is the one
sport where my love of the game has continued to grow,” said
Nielsen.
“Working as a team is what life is all about,” said Nielsen.
“Mostly what I like about softball is the team aspect and how every
win is a team win.”
The Bills continued the tournament that day taking on No. 12
Michigan in a hard fought battle that left the Billikens with a 3-0
loss.
Billiken pitchers Kerri Higgins and Nielsen gave up only two
hits, but the Bills fell to 9-19 on the season.
Closing out the tournament on Sunday, the Billikens took a tough
4-3 loss to Eastern Kentucky giving up an early 2-0 lead.
The Bills had 11 hits and Kristin Rossi allowed only two hits in
three innings.
The Billikens will face off with Notre Dame and Western Kentucky
in a tournament this Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
On Sunday the Bills face host Indiana.
