Last night, the Saint Louis University men’s soccer team
completed its spring schedule, matching up with University of
Missouri-St. Louis and Washington University.
Against UMSL, the Billikens played to a 1-1 tie after two
30-minute halves. The Billikens dominated play, outshooting UMSL
14-2. Forward Vedad Ibisevic scored for SLU, with 6:27 remaining in
the first half.
Brett Brannan sent the ball into the box, where Ibisevic put the
ball on goal. An UMSL defender attempted to clear the ball off the
goal line, but to no avail as the ball crossed the line.
Early in the second half, the Billikens had a chance to add to
their lead when Adam Pepper sent his shot just wide of the left
post.
UMSL netted the equalizer when Jeff Facchin scored with 17
minutes remaining. Facchin received the ball near the top of the
penalty area, where he chipped the ball over SLU keeper Martin
Hutton.
SLU had a good chance to reclaim the lead with five minutes
remaining when Eddie Parker sent a cross into the box. Ibisevic
flicked the ball over, with a header to Alex Matteson, who sent his
shot just wide of the left post.
In the second game of the double header, SLU faced off with
Wash. U. With about 16 minutes remaining, a pair of well
placed-passes almost led to a goal for the Billikens. Matteson, who
received the ball from Danny Wynn, fed Ibisevic, who moved in on
goal.
The shot, which to the press box appeared to go in the goal, hit
a post behind the net.
Upon further deliberation, the goal was taken off the
scoreboard.
Early in the second half, Wash. U. evened the score when Sam
Jacobs sent a pass across the goal, where Nate Peller placed the
ball in the roof of the net.
With 7:17 remaining, Pepper gave the Billikens the lead back
when he received a pass from Kyle Hopson and put the ball in the
back of the net.
Wash. U. had one last chance to tie the score with two minutes
remaining when SLU keeper Jeff Sackman made a diving save to
deflect Austin Barsophy’s shot over the goal.
With the Billikens leading 2-1 after two 30-minute periods, both
teams agreed to go to another period.
On Saturday afternoon, the Saint Louis University men’s soccer
team came away with a 3-2 win over the Bradley University Braves in
a spring match at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens scored twice in the first 15 minutes to go out to
a 2-0 lead.
Defender Mo Benne drilled a 12-yard shot from the left side of
the penalty area into the back of the net, with forward Will John
picking up the assist.
The second goal came in the 14th minute when a centering pass
from midfielder Danny Wynn found John at the top of the Bradley
penalty area, where John scored form 15 yards out to bring the lead
to 2-0.
The Braves quickly came back when midfielder Luke Kreamalmeyer,
a native of nearby Edwardsville, Ill., capitalized on a failed
clearing attempt in the SLU penalty area, scoring on a difficult
angle from the right side with SLU keeper on the ground to cut the
Billikens’ lead in half.
The Billikens widened their lead in the 28th minute when Benne
moved in along the left side of the field and found an open John,
who chipped the ball over Bradley keeper Chris Dunsheath from eight
yards out, for his second goal of the game.
After the flurry of early scoring, both teams were scoreless for
the rest of the first half, with the Billikens taking a 3-1 lead
into the halftime intermission.
After almost 50 minutes of scoreless play, the Braves scored the
final goal of the game in the 77th minute, again capitalizing on a
SLU miscue. After a giveaway, Kreamalmeyer and Teddy Anderson moved
in on a SLU defender and Sackman.
The two-on-one turned into a two-on-none when the defender
slipped. Kreamalmeyer found Anderson, who easily placed the ball
into the empty net.
For the Bills, John had a hand in all three goals, scoring two
and assisting on the other. Benne added a goal and an assist.
Kreamalmeyer had a hand in both Bradley goals, scoring in one and
assisting on the other.
The Billikens held a 15-12 advantage in shots, while the Braves
had a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks won.
