Stanford defeated Saint Louis University field hockey in double
overtime 3-2 at the Anheuser-Busch Center last Monday. Stanford
broke a four-game losing streak when Stanford player Liz Robinson
scored a breakaway goal at the 89:95 mark of the game.
“Our defense did everything right, [Robinson] just had a real
nice play and they were able to finish,” said senior Marissa Lynn.
“We came out with heart. Even though we lost the game, I think that
we gave everything in that game and that is a good feeling.”
The afternoon started off bright for the Billikens, snagging the
first goal at the three-minute mark of the game.
“I was excited to score early in the game putting our team ahead
on the scoreboard,” said freshman Catherine Donovan.
Donovan scored her second goal of the season with an assist by
Lynn, NorPac’s assist leader.
“The ball was near our scoring circle, so I just put it in the
circle, and Cat was there and finished it,” Lynn said. “I passed
the ball to her and she had a great shot that put it in. It was
great to score within the first 5 minutes of the game and to score
first.”
The Cardinals came back to tie the score at 1-1 on Jessica Zutz’
first goal, with an assist by Aska Sturdeven just before at
halftime.
The Cardinal’s then took the lead off of another goal by
Zutz–assisted by Sturdeven off of a corner with five minutes
remaining in regulation.
SLU sent the game into overtime when Lynn scored her first goal
of the season at 60:45 to finish off a penalty corner with Michelle
Sinclair and Jamie Smeland picking up assists.
“The ball came out, and Jamie passed the ball to me. I shot the
ball and it bounced over the goalie,” Lynn said. “I was excited to
tie up the game.”
Neither team had any more shots in regulation play.
In the first overtime Stanford out shot the Bills 3-2, but could
not score. The second overtime proved more fruitful for Stanford
with the only shot taken being the game-winning shot by
Robinson.
“We all gave our best effort during the game,” Donovan said. “We
were prepared to play, and I think it showed throughout the
game.”
The Cardinals out shot the Bills 11-6 in the match. The
Billikens’ next game will be Oct. 11 against Lindenwood at 8 p.m.
in St. Charles, Mo.
Senior forward for the Saint Louis University field hockey team,
Ellen Rapp, is awarded player of the week for the second time this
season in the NorPac league.
“I was really surprised when my coach informed me I had become
offensive player of the week for a second time; I really was not
expecting that,” Rapp said.
“It feels great, but I know the only reason I received it was
because of all the hard work my teammates have done as well.
Without them I would never have received that award; they work just
has hard as I do, if not harder, and I think that each one deserves
that award more than I do.”
