Men’s Golf
The men’s golf team captured its first tournament victory of the year, winning DePaul’s John Dallio Memorial.
The Bills shot a one over par 865 for the three-round tournament.
They were paced by senior David Perritt, who was the tournament medalist. They distanced themselves by five strokes over the second-place team.
Perritt shot 209 for the three rounds, or seven under par.
He shot 70, 71 and 68, respectively, over the course of the tournament.
For his efforts, Perritt was named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Player of the Week.
Junior Ryan Bleche came in third place in the tourament, shooting 70, 71 and 72 over each of his rounds.
Senior Barry O’Neill also placed in the top 10 among all finishers with a score of 221.
The tournament took place at Prairie Landing Golf Club in West Chicago, Ill.
The victory was the first for the Billikens since they won the St. John’s Treasure Coast challenge in March of 2004.
Next up for the Billikens is the Missouri Bluffs Challenge on Monday in St. Charles, Mo.
Swimming and Diving
The Saint Louis University swimming and diving team opened their season last weekend at Washington University.
The teams split the contest; the lady Billikens won, only to see the men defeated.
After finishing last season undefeated, the women started off the season right with an impressive 183-117.
Freshman standout Elena Ramirez led the Bills with three victories in the 200 butterfly, the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. All three of her wins were pool records for the Wash. U. pool, and her wins in butterfly also set new school records.
Senior stalwart Kelly Tessar was back in form for the Billikens, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke.
Senior Alice Altepeter also won two events for the Billikens; she led a sweep of the 50 freestyle and won the 100 freestyle. Finishing behind Altepeter in the 50 free were freshmen Brianna Motley and Emily Stuifbergen.
Diver Erin Lasinski, a junior, won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 216.65.
The standout on the men’s side was freshman Kevin Parker, who won two events for the Billikens. He took home first place in both the 200 backstroke and the 200 butterfly.
Junior B.J. Brungardt also won the 1000 freestyle for the Billikens.
Women’s Golf
After struggling for much of the early season, the Bills picked up their first match-play victory of the season on Saturday, Oct. 1. The match took place at Harry Mussatto Golf Course, the home course for Western Illinois.
The Bills needed a fifth score tiebreaker to beat Western Illinois 425-431. Sophomore Keely Fitzgerald shot a 90-her score was the tiebreaker that put the team over the top.
Freshman Christa Cloutier paced the Billikens by shooting a blistering 81. Cloutier was three strokes behind Western Illinois’ Karra Johnson for the low score for the match.
The rest of the Billikens also played well. Sophomore Jenny Madras shot 82, freshman Caitlin Cummings recorded an 84 and Kaela Burke finished the initial scoring for the Billikens with an 88.
The Bills’ initial 335 was a match-play recorded for the infant team.
Next up for the Billikens is the Arkansas State Lady Indian Classic on Monday. The tournament is 36 holes played over the course of two days. The tournament will take place in Jonesboro, Ark., at the Jonesboro Country Club.
