In their first season in Atlantic 10 play, the Saint Louis University women’s soccer team has left an indelible stamp on the competition.
With a 5-0 thrashing of LaSalle on Oct. 30, the Billikens claimed the regular season conference championship.
They also earned the first seed in the upcoming conference tournament, as well as a first round bye.
The match marked Senior Day for the team, as they honored the players nearing the end of their careers.
Senior midfielder Kelly Ferguson led the charge for the Billikens, scoring two first-half goals.
Junior forward Maureen Hughes also scored two for the Bills and assisted on another goal.
Sophomore Cassi Winchell netted the Billikens’ fifth and final goal.
Hughes started the scoring in the 22nd minute.
Winchell sent a pass to Hughes, who had one defender and the goalkeeper to beat.
Hughes side-stepped the LaSalle defender and put the ball past the charging LaSalle goalie into the bottom right corner.
After Hughes put the Bills on top for good, Ferguson put on a show scoring the next two goals for the Billikens in the span of five minutes.
On a deadball, junior Courtney Hulcer sent an arcing pass, which Ferguson headed in from six yards out.
Less than five minutes later, Ferguson connected again; this time, the assist was registered by freshman forward Caroline Sweeney.
Ferguson buried a shot from 18 yards away after Sweeney sent a pass backwards.
The goal gave Ferguson 10 for the year, which leads the Billikens.
Hughes scored again early in the second half, this time drilling a shot in from 15 yards out.
Junior midfielder Dee Guempel left the ball for a charging Hughes, who took it and sent it past LaSalle keeper Amy Grant.
Winchell added a goal to her assist in the 53rd minute.
Hughes and Hulcer were credited with assists on the play. Winchell arched a shot around the goal from the left side.
A LaSalle defender attempted to clear out Winchell’s shot but swung and missed, and the ball glanced off her back leg and into the goal.
Goalkeepers Amanda Martin and Sarah Schweitzer combined on the shutout for the Billikens.
The game marked the final regular season home game for seniors Martin, Ferguson, Lachlyne Eastman, Amy Smith, MaKensie Johnson and Schweitzer.
For her stellar performance, Ferguson was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week.
In the two games spanning that week, she scored two goals and an assist.
Next up for the Billikens is this weekend’s Atlantic 10 tournament in Dayton, Ohio.
The University of Dayton is hosting the tournament, which ends Sunday.
The Billikens will play one of three teams: Saint Joseph’s, Duquesne or Dayton.
They will draw whichever team is the lowest remaining seed after the first round.
If the Billikens win the conference tournament, they will be granted an automatic bid into the NCAA championship tournament-a season-long goal for the team, according to coach Tim Champion.
The Billikens finished the season with a 13-4 record, including 8-0 in conference play.
