After 19 games the roller coaster ride of a season that the Saint Louis University basketball team has had finally reached some stability. Alternating wins and losses for the entire season, the Billikens notched their first winning streak of the year after consecutive wins against Fordham and Rhode Island. True to form, the steady Billikens followed their most disheartening loss of the season against the Saint Joseph Hawks with a come-from-behind 64-54 victory over the Rams of Fordham, Saturday at the Savvis Center. The final score was a bit deceptive; the Bills found themselves reeling in the first half, apparently experiencing the same offensive woes that did them in against St. Joe’s.The team was down 10-0 in the opening minutes and 28-22 at halftime, when head coach Brad Soderberg advised the team that it was not the time to panic.”At halftime, we told them to just stick to the base offense and play basketball. We didn’t draw up any set plays or X-and-O. We wanted them to be aggressive off the dribble and attack. Once we started making shots, it all looked better,” said Soderberg.Out of the gates, it was SLU’s defense that set the tone for the rest of the game. They held Fordham without a point for the first six minutes of the second half. The team tied the game at 28 on freshman Tommie Liddell’s jumper. Both teams traded blows for the next several minutes, the Bills tying the game at 39 with less than 10 minutes remaining, following baskets by Liddell and freshman Kevin Lisch. SLU took the lead for good after junior Ian “Zeus” Voyoukas made two layups. The Rams pulled back to within one with five minutes left, but a Voyoukas slam dunk spring-boarded the Bills to the victory.Lisch had a career-high 18 points to lead the team, while fellow frosh Liddell chipped in 16. Voyoukas, who had his poorest outing of the year against St. Joe’s, bounced back with 16 points.”We tried to penetrate off the dribble, be aggressive and get Ian involved,” Lisch said. “Because when Ian isn’t involved, we lose half our offense,” said Lisch. The team nearly doubled its first-half output with 42 points following the intermission. The Bills punished the Fordham Rams on the glass out rebounding them 40-23, led by sophomore Luke Meyer, who in his second straight start notched a career-high nine boards. The Billikens traveled to Kingston, R.I., on Wednesday to take on another Rams team, this one of the University of Rhode Island, who came into the game in a three-way tie with Xavier and Richmond for second in the 14-team Atlantic 10. The Billikens were only one game behind URI in the standings.SLU played well from start to finish in this one, dominating this bunch of Rams by a final score of 58-53. The Billikens came out firing on all cylinders, nearly shooting the lights out at the Ryan Center. Senior Anthony Drejaj, a native of New Jersey playing in front of his family, was perfect from the field, scoring 12 points en route to a 36-23 first half lead. Drejaj finished with 14 on the night. The team shot 50 percent from the field and 66 percent from the arc in the first half. The team looked very unselfish, often passing up open looks in order to get teammates better shots at the basket. The Rams had no answer for the depth, athleticism and deft shooting touch of the Billiken backcourt.”We were emphasizing how important it is to win on the road; we shot very well in the first half and made the defensive stops we needed,” said Soderberg at halftime. The Billikens continued their aerial assault, launching jump shot after jump shot, and opening up a 52-38 lead with a little more than 12 minutes to play. Freshman Kevin Lisch continued to have the hot hand, hitting an array of 3-pointers and step-back jumpers on his way to a game-high 18 points, including 5-7 from the field and 3-5 from 3-point range. The Rams were able to cut into the lead, but it was too little too late as SLU cruised to the five-point victory. Liddell only scored only a point for the game but came up with nine rebounds on the night. The team played its usual stellar defense, holding the Rams to 32 percent shooting on the night and stifling the Rams’ best offensive weapon, Dawan Robinson, to a 3-14 shooting night. Pending the results of Xavier’s game with 10th-ranked George Washington, the Atlantic 10 leader, SLU may have played its way into a five-way tie for second place in the conference. The team was picked to finish second-to-last by the coaches and media in the preseason. The Billikens will host Xavier at 1 p.m. at the Savvis Center on Super Bowl Sunday. The Musketeers (13-4, 6-2) will be out for revenge, as SLU defeated them on their home court two weeks ago in Cincinnati.
