Statues streak through BSC

A certain bunch of scantily-clad scupltures will be invading the Busch Student Center tomorrow evening to wow an audience of adoring fans.

That group is, of course, Saint Louis University’s own male a cappella group, Bare Naked Statues, who will be headlining the “A Cappella Invasion” concert, their first show of the semester.

This year, BNS welcomes five new members to their group, adding up to a total of 15 members (including one who is studying in Madrid this semester). They plan to serenade their fans with the familiar mixture of pop-rock that has influenced their previous endeavors.

Sophomore Patrick Turner, who is singing his way through his second year as a Statue, said that concert-goers can also look forward to some new sounds this year.

“There are two new groups coming to sing that are making their debut performance at Saint Louis University,” he said.?”This includes Undeclared from Luther College [in Iowa] and True Men from Truman State University.”

Turner indicated that spending the night Bare Naked would include “a wide variety of selections from different a cappella groups from around the region . an entertaining environment with some fun music and an assortment of adult beverages [available through a cash bar at the venue].”

BNS’ colorful history at SLU is relatively short. According to their Web site, the group began as the brainchild of Lawrence Hwang, who graduated in 2003. Morphing from a seven-member troupe to a fully formed, 12-man group, BNS became known for “stopping by the dorm lobbies and putting on a show.”

The inaugural BNS concert in April of 2001 solidified the group’s campus-wide notoriety. Since then, BNS has performed dozens of times, both at their own concerts and at events for other organizations.

The idea that practice makes perfect is familiar to BNS members, who scatter five hours of late-night practice time throughout the week.

This year, the group is logging several hours of studio time, hard at work on their sophomore album, a follow-up to their debut, Please Don’t Feed the Statues, which included a cappella covers of “Clocks,” “Your Body is a Wonderland” and “Jessie’s Girl.” They record on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to midnight.

“A Cappella Invasion” is tomorrow night, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the first floor ballroom in the BSC. Tickets are $7 at the door or $5 if purchased early. You can buy tickets today from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the BSC, tonight at Griesedieck or tomorrow from 10 a.m. to noon at the BSC.
