The Saint Louis University men’s tennis team won a hotly contested match-up with conference rival Xavier early this week. The women’s team, still regrouping after the loss of their number-one singles player, Amanda Hellberg, fell despite an inspired performance.
Winning all three close doubles matches, the Bills picked up wins at the third, fourth and sixth singles spots, to cement their victory. Winners included Paul Feder, Sean McManus, Felipe Acosta, P.J. Hendrie, Marcus Fadul and Adam Reeb on the doubles side. The doubles side, which in total gives a point to the winning team, has been vital to the Billikens’ success this year.
Winning their second straight match, SLU improved to 2-4.
Singles winners Hendrie, Fadul and Gordon played third, fourth and sixth singles, respectively.
All three singles wins came in three sets, with each Billiken losing the first set. In the deciding match of the competition, Gordon overcame a 1-6 first set loss to seal the victory for SLU.
On the women’s side, the Billikens fell to the Musketeers 5-2. Despite picking up a win at the second doubles spot, the team of Jo Becker and Ana Renda won 8-2, and SLU lost the point.
On the singles side, the Bills won the first and third matches of the day, capturing the first and sixth spots. Katerina Lozanova rallied after losing the first set 2-6, closing out 6-3, 6-1. Tara Grant won the first and third sets of her match, finishing with a score of 6-3, 3-6 and 6-2.
With this match, the Billikens fall to 4-7 for the year.
Bolstered by the team’s big win againt Xavier, Fadul and Hendrie took home both of the A-10’s weekly honors. Fadul, winner at fourth singles against Xavier, also brought in SLU’s other win of the week, against Illinois-Springfield, 6-2 and 6-0.
Hendrie has won his last three doubles matches and his last two singles match-ups.
